Audubon Trip To Eagle Observatory
Audubon Trip To Eagle Observatory
SOUTHBURY â Lillinonah Audubon Society is offering an opportunity to see the bald eagles at Shepaug Dam. The eagles feed but do not nest in the Southbury area.
Although a few bald eagles do nest in north-central Connecticut, most of the eagles at Shepaug Dam come from faraway places such as Maine and Canada. They are attracted by the fish, which are accessible because the dam helps keep the river from freezing. The viewing is usually best in late January to mid-February, when hardly a day passes that the eagles are not sighted.
The morning program will take place on Saturday, February 3. Those interested in participating in the Lillinonah trip should meet at the commuter parking lot off Exit 14 of I-84 at 8:30 am. The group will carpool from the commuter lot to the observatory.
Northeast Utilities has built a shelter about 1,000 feet from where the birds gather and there are a few spotting scopes. Participants should dress warmly and bring binoculars to better scan the skies for eagles and other birds.
The public is invited and there is no charge, but anyone who plans to attend is asked to call Martha Cushman at 798-0477.
