First Selectman Candidates Visit NHS
The Republican and Democratic candidates for the first selectman have been making the rounds in their attempts to get their respective messages out to the public before the local election on November 4. While most students at Newtown High School are not voters, both candidates gladly accepted an invitation from the schoolâs honors-level American Government class to discuss the issues at the center of this yearâs election.
Like the townâs older generations, the students in the government class were especially interested in the candidatesâ comments on the future disposition of Fairfield Hills, the local budgetary process and its impact on local education, and local efforts to curb teen substance abuse.
American Government teacher Kristen Hardy said she was pleased to have Mr Sheluck and Mr Rosenthal visit. âI wanted to make sure they both were here to have an opportunity to express their views,â she said. âI also liked the emphasis on local government, since in class weâve been focusing largely on federal government.â
