WEST HARTFORD - Angelo Bodetti had to make his move and he was running out of time.

Newtown was clinging to a 28-27 lead over Conard of West Hartford in a quad meet this past weekend and – because the Nighthawks were forfeiting the 275-pound bout – needed Bodetti to pin Ted Dombrowski.

Anything less would lead to a loss.

But with little time to spare – just 26 seconds, in fact – Bodetti turned Dombrowski on his back and pinned the Conard man at 5:34 of the third period to give the ‘Hawks the cushion they needed to nip the Chieftains, 34-33.

“Angelo was schooling the kid pretty well,” said coach Alan Potter, “but he was just having a tough time turning him. He just did get it, too, which was great because we had made a lot of mistakes during that match and it would have upset me if we had lost.”

During the quad, the Nighthawks went 2-1 with the win over Conard, a win over Enfield (57-24), and a loss to Newington (42-30). That effort, coupled with a win over New Fairfield (50-24) last Wednesday, helped lift the Nighthawks’ record to 9-3 overall, 5-1 in the South-West Conference.

It was a good weekend.

103 pounds – Jon Read was 1-1 with an 18-1 tech fall over Yugia Zhal of Conard and a disqualification against Craig Ryan of Newington (the charge was biting).

112 pounds – John Dietter pinned Pat Lemendia of Enfield (:33) and Zack Bennett of Newington (1:34), but dropped a 6-0 decision to Jared Schlar of Conard to go 2-1 on the day.

119 pounds – Matt Sullivan pinned Chris Gotary of Conard (1:59) and Dan Clement of Enfield (2:35), but was pinned by Eric Soucy of Newington (5:03) to also go 2-1 on the day.

125 pounds – Ross Alpert went 1-2, defeating Will Arcari of Enfield, 6-5.

130 pounds – Chris Giacalone pinned Aaron Wrann of Enfield (:28) and Nick Feola pinned Dustin Day of Conard (2:29). Feola also earned a forfeit against Newington.

135 pounds – Dan Maley went 3-0 as he pinned Jessie Wrubel of Conard (1:07) and Bryan Triglio of Newington (3:20) and earned a forfeit against Enfield.

140 pounds – Adam Prokop pinned Brendan Sullivan of Enfield (:30) and was defeated by John Wrubel (8-6) in overtime to go 1-2 for the day.

145 pounds – Mike Daniels finished 1-2 with a forfeit against Enfield, a disqualification against Newington, and a tough 3-2 loss to Tim MacGougan of Conard.

152 pounds – Vinny Bodetti was pinned three times.

160 pounds – Steve Selezan pinned Nate Mathewson of Enfield (:17) and Chris Certanzan of Newington (2:54) and earned an 18-3 tech fall against George Mailer of Conard to go 3-0 on the day and run his personal record to 21-1.

171 pounds – Tyler Miles pinned Dan Norman of Enfield (:53) and then got lost a pair of high-scoring battles to Phil Schrenkengast of Conard (13-9) and Tim Owens of Newington (19-14).

189 pounds – Chris Symes pinned Chad Turbide of Enfield (4:29) and went 1-2 on the day.

215 pounds – Angelo Bodetti pinned Mark Rolfe of Newington (:27) and Ted Dombrowski of Conard (5:34) and earned a forfeit against Enfield to go 3-0 on the day.

So, the ‘Hawks were on a pretty good roll heading into a tough, tough SWC battle with New Milford on Wednesday (after press time). And a win over the Green Wave would keep the Nighthawks’ slim hopes of an SWC title alive.
