Personal Information: Joe Hemingway, 45, project manager for Worth Construction Co., Inc, 14-year Newtown resident, former member of Economic Development Commission, co-chair of Support Our Schools, PTA Council president. Current member of the Legislative Council and the Newtown Organization to Stop Underage Drinking (NO SUDS)
What personal qualities do you have that you believe will benefit the Legislative Council and the community it serves? Although I am an advocate and supporter of our excellent school system, I am able to look at all sides of issues including our budget and property tax. I support tax relief for senior citizens, emergency workers and veterans. I support the major acquisition of open space and reasonable economic development to keep our taxes as low as possible, while still meeting the needs of the town and school system.
What do you believe is the councilâs biggest challenge over the next two years? Helping the town in the process of reaching a consensus on what to do with Fairfield Hills. I supported the recently rejected master plan, however since it was defeated, it needs to be modified a bit. I donât think it needs to be totally redone, however; I think it did a good job of meeting the townâs needs.
What can the Legislative Council do to limit the growth of Newtownâs tax rate? We need to continue our work with the public land trust to find the best way to make major acquisitions of open space to curb residential development, and we also need to continue on the path of reasonable economic development.
