âPulp Friction: New Takes On Paperâ
NEW CANAAN â The New Canaan Society for the Arts will present âPulp Friction â New Takes on Paper,â a show of large and small cast paper installations, found paper sculpture, handmade paper, pulp paintings, kirigami and free form origami. Representing compelling contemporary approaches to an ancient medium, the show will feature 15 artists from across the United States and Canada.
Brian Chan, Sharon Cowley, Jennifer Davies, Lar deSouza, Giang Dinh, Elizabeth Duffy, Jeanine Esposito, Lou Fuchs, Eve Ingalls, Anne Queeney McKeown, Sky Pape, Bernie Peyton, Buzz Spector, Russell Sutherland and Marjorie Tomchuk will all have work on view.
The exhibition will run November 20 until December 18 in the Betty Barker Gallery at the Carriage Barn Arts Center in Waveny Park. There will be an opening reception Sunday, November 20, from 4 to 6 pm, which is free and open to the public.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the society has planned an event for Saturday, December 3, 3 to 5 pm. In a free workshop, the public is invited to come and create handmade paper vessels from abaca pulp or to fold origami reindeer or cranes.
The origami crane has become an international symbol of peace and hope based in part on the Japanese legend that says âfolding 1,000 cranes will cause a wish for health or happiness to be fulfilled.â The society will fold 1,000 cranes on behalf of the clients of the Center for Hope, a local nonprofit organization that helps adults and children living with an illness, grieving a loss and coping with the related trauma.
The public is invited to participate in the project by folding a single crane, or many cranes, to help create a symbol of hope and peace for a place that offers hope to so many. When completed, the 1,000 cranes will be given to the center to display at its facilities. Information on how anyone can participate in this project, regardless of where they live, is available at the gallery, 203-972-1895 or www.CarriageBarn.org.
