Taking Their Best Shots ... Youth Lacrosse Highlights

Junior Girls Gold

Wakeman 7, Gold 5: Maddie Peck and Bailey Solomons combined to make 6 saves. Tess Baldino and Charlotte Stenz collected 4 ground balls. Goals were scored by Casey Harkins (3), Liza Eggleston and Katie Mossbarger. Assists were handed out by Maddie Bridges, Mckensie Hammons, Micaela Hall and Mossbarger.

Senior Girls Blue

Blue 7, New Milford Green 3: Amy Caporale and Olivia Korth held New Milford to only 3 goals with help from a tenacious defense led by Ashley Headen, Taylor Reardon and Lauren Harrison. Olivia Ingham and Korth led the team in ground balls with 4 apiece. Ingham, Tressa Scott, Rachel Wiberg and Kelly O’Sullivan each scored for Newtown.

New Fairfield Blue 9, Blue 6: Helena Sorensen played great in goal behind Ashley Headen’s and Kelly O’Connell’s solid defense. Julia DiLuoffo snapped up 3 ground balls. Noelle Benson, DiLuoffo, Oliva Korth and Tressa Scott all found the net.

Longmeadow Jamboree

Adirondack 5, Blue 4; Simsbury 2, Blue 2; South Windsor 8, Blue 1; South Hadley Orange 5, Blue 2.

Anna Northrop, Amy Caporale, Olivia Korth and Helena Sorensen combined to stop 14 shots on goal. Brittany Boggs, Katie McManus and Sydney Hansen played well. Julie LaPerch and Rachel Wiberg led the team with ground balls. The scoring was provided by Noelle Benson, Tressa Scott, Northrop and Amanda Crowell.

Senior Girls Gold

Longmeadow Jamboree

Gold 11, Somers 2; Gold 8 vs Simsbury 1; Gold 9, Granby 1; Gold 7, Glastonbury 5.

Meaghan Brophy picked up 14 ground balls and Erin Kenning picked up 8. Kristy Vos Winkle picked up 7 and Olivia Phenix another 5. Maddie Fletcher and Meaghan Harkins combined for 6 assists. Brianna Leblanc led the tournament with 16 saves in goal. The defense drew numerous turnovers and charging calls with an incredible defensive display. The defense was led by Carly Ferris, Cassie Ekstrom, Jaclyn Dailey, Kellie O’Sullivan, Emily Maher, Lindsey Jagoe and Phenix. Julia Trudell led all scorers with 8 goals. The rest of the offensive onslaught was led by Paige Murphy, Caroline Kingsley, Allie Samson, Libby DiDomizio, Jagoe, Ekstrom, Brophy, Fletcher, Maher, Vos Winkle, O’Sullivan, Harkins and Kenning.

Gold 15, Ridgefield 7: Brianna Leblanc made 4 critical saves and Carly Ferris scooped up 4 ground balls to lead the team to victory. Meaghan Brophy tossed in 4 goals and Julia Trudell 3 more. Meaghan Harkins had 2 assists and Cassie Ekstrom picked off 2 passes. Jaclyn Dailey forced 2 turnovers on defense. The rest of the scoring was by Erin Kenning, Harkins, Caroline Kingsley, Paige Murphy, Libby Didomizio and Maddie Fletcher.

Bantam Girls In-House

Screaming Eagles vs All Stars: All Stars: Morgan Sclafani and Peyton Cutolo had a great day on attack while Keeley Kortze controlled the defense. Izzy Smalkis turned in an all-around fantastic performance. Screaming Eagles: Nikki Zaccaro had four goals with Haley Harkins and Caroline Caporale each added one goal. Bridget Walsh and Olivia Holman both played well in goal. 

Screaming Eagles vs The Hound Dogs: Screaming Eagles: Haley Harkins had two goals for the Eagles and goals were scored by Caroline Caporale, Alison Kelleher and Nikki Zaccaro. Alexandra Futterman had an outstanding game in goal. The Hound Dogs: Caroline Keane was tough at midfield. Kira Smith controlled the defense while Lauren Carrion was quick on offense. Savannah LaFerriere had many saves in goal.

The Smashers vs The Hungry Hippos: The Smashers: Katherine Bassett had a good defensive game. Sage Karp was quick on the offense. The goal was fiercly defended by Julia Sughrue. Brooke Varnum shined with the Smashers’ goal. The Hungry Hippos: Meghan Doyle, Lauren Zimmerman and Tessa Leon-Gambetta led the offense. Abby Pearson was solid in goal.

Bantam Girls Travel

Newtown 8, New Fairfield 4: Meghan Doyle had three goals and two assists and Nikki Zaccaro had two goals and three assists in the win. Nevan Gattney had two goals and a season-high 10 ground balls. Goals were scored by Caroline Caporale and Emily Bell. Caroline Keane and Elizabeth Cain played well on defense.

Newtown 12, Danbury 1: Nikki Zaccaro had six goals and two assists while Meghan Doyle and Tessa Leon-Gambetta each added two goals and two assists. Emily Bell and Jillian DiMartino also had goals for Newtown. Nevan Gattney had four assists and five ground balls in the win. Julia Sughrue had an excellent game in goal with three saves.

Boys In-House

Shamrox 4, Titans 3: The Shamrox were led by strong play from Mark Hall and Tucker Garrity who, along with Kyle Sullivan, scored goals. Jack McDermott and Garrett Fetchick were aggressive to help limit the Titans’ scoring opportunities. Kyle Roche and Riley McCaffery both scored to keep the Titans close. Jake Meyer, Alex Street and Michael Garner played tough lacrosse to keep the ball moving and limit the Shamrox offense.

Bandits 2, Roughnecks 2: The Roughnecks scored the first two goals of the game, with Stewart Olson and Ethan Cox finding the back of the cage. Michael Sheridan and Tanner Stergue kept the defensive pressure on in the first half to keep the Bandits of the scoreboard. The Bandits found their offensive grove in the second half with goals by Ethan Tousignant and Griffin Cross. Reid Harrison, Grenville Paynter and Brennan Mayer were relentless on both halves of the field in the second half to keep the Roughnecks from scoring. Both teams had outstanding goaltending from Tyler Rising, Brendan Hall and Gino Pagliaro.

Riptide 4, Outlaws 1: Playing well and scoring for the Riptide were Matt Meyers, Nick Lansing and Gordon Walsh. The Outlaws were led by Nathan Sanchez at attack, Cameron Mitchell at midfield, and Riley Rison at defense.

Lizards 6, Rattlers 5: Jake Erney, Ryan Campbell and Spencer Burden led the Rattlers. The Lizards were led by Adam Bell, Owen McInerny and Christopher Mok. Nick Genovese make a save as the clock expired to preserve the win for the Lizards.

Dragons 6, Cannons 6: Kris Whelan, Declan Sullivan and Brandon Chieffo led the Dragons. Evan Eggleston, Bobby Haskins and Jack Wellman played well for the Cannons.

Syracuse 4,  Virginia 3: Goals were scored by Colin Smalkais, Cameron Partrick and Andrew Tousignant. Joe Carrino, Andrew Svanda, Sam Adam and Wyatt Hill had 11 saves in goal. For Virginia, goals were scored by Tommy Rahr, Mike Cirone and Steven Walsh. Colin Thies, Nick Norberg and Michael Poulter helped to keep the game close.

Hofstra 5,  Hopkins 1: For Hofstra, goals by Otto Kerler, Bubba Condon, Ryan Sullivan and Alec Beauchemin led the way. Owen Gray had 3 saves in goal.  The lone goal for Hopkins was scored by Stephen Ferigno. Jimmy Leidlein, Grant Shaw and Colin Post had good games in the field.

Boys Travel Results

Chappaqua Lightning 15, Newtown Lightning Boys Blue 6: Newtown took a trip to New York to face the Chappaqua Lightning this past weekend. The game was close in the first half, but Chappaqua pulled away in the second half.  Newtown’s offense was led by versatile attackman and middie, Matthew Bucci. Newtown’s defense was led by Noah LaFerriere.

Bethel Lightning B 7, Ligntning Blue 3: Tommy Kitzmiller and Riley Rising played well on offense. David Anderson played well on both sides of the ball as both attackman and goalie and had 6 saves. Cyril Brown led Newtown’s defense and had 5 ground balls.

Newtown Junior Blue 16, Simsbury Junior 6A 0: Newtown came out firing against Simsbury and outstanding goaltending by Wyatt Hill on several point-blank chances late in the fourth quarter preserved a shutout. The defense of Nick Rubino, CJ Dunn, Colton Smith and Cameron Partrick kept the Simsbury offense in check all game and consistently cleared the ball up the field. Goal scoring and assists were spread among eight different players started off by a fast break give and go in the first minute of the game when Clay Gattey found Brandon Powell cutting to the net for the goal. In addition Clay, Riley Cross, Aaron Hill, Jason Savoca, Deegan Beauchemin, Stephen Ferrigno and Cameron Partrick scored. Colton Smith led the ground ball attack with 5 ground balls and 5 successful clears.

Newtown Junior Gold 8,  New Milford 7: Strong play from midfielders Bubba Condon, Logan Walsh and Conner Hanley got Newtown out to an early lead.  Nolan Fisher and Chris Brown made nice take-away checks as Newtown was able to hold a slim lead until the fourth quarter.  Zack Aumueller came up with an interception to help set up the winning goal.

Newtown Senior Blue 4, Pomperaug Senior 3: The Senior Blue team lost a nail-biter in double overtime to Pomperaug. Ian Waley scored the first marker of the game and Senior Blue trailed 3-1 well into the third quarter. Tom Giardan cleared the ball to Jon Meyers who fed JP Kitzmiller for the second goal. The tying goal was scored by Kitzmiller with 9 seconds left in regulation. Justin Saint did a terrific job on faceoffs and ground balls and Nick Fatse and Andrew Volkers did an outstanding job controlling the Pomperaug attackers. Casey Fuller put in his usual strong performance in goal with 15 saves.

Newtown Senior Gold 7, Simsbury Seniors 3: After a one point loss to a strong Wakeman team on Friday night, the Senior Gold Boys bounce back to win. Dan Hebert scored for a 1-0 lead. The second period was won by determination on ground balls by midfielders Phil Reynolds, Stephen Walsh and Tyler Hanley. Close defense was anchored by Brian Kruger, Tom Bauer and Jack Kearney. Jacob Newton-Tanzer was hustled the entire game. Patrick Thornberg and James Marusi controlled the field at long stick middie. Evan Isaacs was strong between the pipes with 10 saves. Points were scored by Graham Derrickson (2 goals, 1 assist), Dan Hebert (goal), Tyler Hanley (goal), Stephen Walsh (goal) and James Marusi (2 goals).
