Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

*Work on the QUILTS OF VALOR project every Friday from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. Bring your lunch. Donations of cotton material are welcomed.

*Narrated SIGHTSEEING CRUISE aboard The Southland on Wednesday, July 9; departing at 9:30 am en route to Narragansett, R.I. Enjoy lunch at the Coast Guard House. Visit Harbor of Refuge, Point Judith Lighthouse and islands and inlets of the great Salt Pond. Cost is $83.

*Back by popular demand is a trip to Hunts Landing on July 16 for a Patriots Salute, with feasting, dancing, singing, and merriment. A great way to celebrate the Independence Day. Depart at 9 am; $88 per person.

*Enjoy ITALIAN FESTIVAL at the Aqua Turf Club on Tuesday, July 29, with delicious food, a live band, interactive entertainment and lots of fun. Depart 10 am; $65.

*CRUISING CALMLY ALONG! to Holyoke Heritage State Park, lunch a the elegant Delaney House, and cruise along the Connecticut River on The Lady Bea between the Holyoke Dam and Northampton. Depart at 8 am on Wednesday, August 6; $73 per person.

*24th Annual STATEWIDE SENIOR OUTING at Holiday Hill in Cheshire, on Monday, August 25, from 9 am to 4 pm; bus will depart at 8:30 am; $25 per ticket. All day food and ice cream, entertainment, three pools, bocce, hayrides, and horseshoes.

*See the Mel Brooks musical, The Producers, at WESTCHESTER BROADWAY THEATRE on Wednesday, September 3. Depart at 9 am; $76 per person.

*FREE COMPUTER LESSONS are given every Monday and Tuesday at 3 pm.

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Menu For Week Of

July 7–11

Monday: Swedish meatballs served over broad noodles, peas and carrots, wheat bread, mixed fruit juice, seasonal fresh fruit.

Tuesday: Turkey hot dogs on buns with mustard, chili, corn niblets, Italian ice.

Wednesday: Garlic baked chicken quarter, sweet potato pone, fresh zucchini, potato bread, Bartlett pears.

Thursday: Shrimp bisque with crackers, seafood salad served on a bed of lettuce with sliced cucumber and beet salad, French dressing, Portuguese roll, melon wedge.

And for planning ahead—

Monday, July 14: Chicken cordon bleu, rice pilaf, French green beans, croissant, fruit and pudding parfait with whipped topping .

Tuesday, July 15: Crab cakes with remoulade sauce, tater tot with ketchup, chopped spinach, whole wheat bread, cranberry juice, vanilla pudding with whipped topping.
