The Danbury Music Centre Community Band, under the direction of Albert Montecalvo, will perform “Invitation to Summer” at Newtown Congregational Church on Sunday, June 1, at 4 pm.

Presented by Newtown Cultural Arts Commission and Danbury Music Centre, the concert will feature “Amazing Grace,” and “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Mis. Works by Gustave Holst and Leonard Bernstein will also be featured.

The band will also perform “The Circus Band” by Danbury native Charles Ives.

The concert is free with contributions gratefully accepted. The church is at 14 West Street.

Newtown Cultural Arts Commission Chair Laura Lerman said Danbury Music Centre “is such a terrific resource for people who want to create music as well as those who want to experience live music.

“We hope this is the first of many concerts The Commission can bring to Newtown,” she added.

Albert Montecalvo founded the Danbury Music Centre Band in 2021. He has been a part of the Danbury Music Center since 2002 and was director of music grades K-12 and bands in Carmel, N.Y., until his retirement in 1998. He has performed as a drummer and percussionist with many local orchestras, theater groups and big bands.

The band is regional and attracts members from all area towns, with several members from Newtown. Area residents who play standard band instruments are encouraged to contact The Danbury Music Center at dmc@danburymusiccentre.org for position openings in the band and audition schedules.
