Snapshot: Laura Cole
Family: My immediate family is my husband, James; my mom Vykiena; our two kids and their significant others, Taylor and Jessica and Lindsay and Christopher; and three grandbabies, Olivia, Christopher, and James.
How did you meet your husband? I met Jim in February 1977 on a blind date during a snow storm. We have been together ever since.
Pets: We recently adopted a Lab-German short-haired pointer mix puppy, Georgie. He’s about a year old now and he is energy on four legs.
Work: I just celebrated my 40th year with Newtown Savings Bank. I am currently the customer experience manager.
Are you a member of any clubs, organizations, and/or communities of faith? I am vice president of Northwest Connecticut Draft Horse Association; I’ve been a member there for 15 years. I also do a lot of things through the bank, like food share and food drives for and donations to FAITH Food Pantry.
What did you want to be when you grew up? I wanted to drive the Budweiser hitch of Clydesdales. It’s still a dream — I would love to hold the line of the six horses or better.
What do you like to do with your free time? I like to spend it with the grandbabies. My daughter has a pool at her house, so in the summer we’re usually up there a lot for family picnics and gatherings. She’s kind of taken over that part of entertaining. I still do Christmas and Thanksgiving, but she’s taken on a lot of the other things.
Do you have a favorite reading genre? Something with a little bit of romance, and intrigue, and some mystery. Most of the time I’ll look online and find something for my Kindle.
What are you currently reading? The Shack by William Paul Young.
Favorite music genre? Classic rock and country.
If you could spend a day with one person, living or deceased, who would you choose and why? There are two: my Poppy, I was his shadow growing up; and my dad, who I seemed to really meld with as I got older. They were both a very big part of my raising, and they’re not here anymore. I still have my mother, but my Poppy and my dad are the front-runners of who I’d like to see again.
Favorite TV show? I like watching The Incredible Dr Pol. The show isn’t on anymore, but I love the reruns and I met him and his family in 2014 at the World Percheron Congress. They were guests and they did seminars during the congress, and they did some fun stuff and it was great to meet them. I had seen them on TV and then to meet them there was really cool.
Favorite food? I like to try new things, but any good Italian food, or anything grilled or smoked is always good.
Do you have a favorite travel destination? We like the Caribbean. We’ve been there several times; we usually cruise it because that way you get more ports in even if you’re only there for a day.
If we go somewhere to stay, we love Aruba. That was our first experience in the Caribbean and we absolutely love it. It’s a beautiful island, it’s very safe, and the beaches are amazing.
What is your proudest accomplishment? Getting my college degree. That was something my father always wanted me to get, and I kept putting it off. I went and got it when I was 50. It took me four years, but I did it.
Second would be raising my kids and the fact they’re both good adult human beings and both have done well. They’ve picked up a lot of the same good traits that were instilled in me by my parents and my grandparents.
Favorite color? Blue.
What is your favorite thing about Newtown? The community. I really like the community. After working here for 40 years, I know it’s a great area. I feel very lucky to have worked here.
Do you have a personal credo? Something my dad used to tell me was “I’m right and you’re wrong and that’s all there is to it.”
My own personal credo though, is “I carry 50 pound sacks of grain and 75 pound bales of hay and tell a 2,000 pound animal what to do, when to do it, and for how long. You will not be a problem.”
