EAST HADDAM — “Who could ask for anything more?” goes the lyric in the ineffable Gershwin tune “I Got Rhythm.” It’s a fitting final lyric to the joyous new production of the Gershwin jukebox musical Crazy For You, now playing at Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam under the direction of Michael Fling.

Crazy for You is the grand-daddy of all jukebox musicals. It takes George and Ira Gershwin’s famous catalog of songs and weaves them into a good old-fashioned musical comedy, with a book by Ken Ludwig.

Debuting on Broadway in 1992 and winning the Tony for best musical, the plot of Crazy For You follows loosely the 1930 Broadway show turned 1943 Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland film Girl Crazy.

Dancer Bobby Child (played by Will Burton) takes his big Broadway dreams to small town Deadrock, Nevada and instantly falls for Polly Baker (Brittany Zeinstra), the one and only girl next door. Like any good Ludwig farce, mistaken identity, miscommunications, and misunderstandings reign supreme and hilarity ensues. Add a dash of top notch singing and dancing and you have a recipe for success.

Burton fills the tap shoes of the triple threat Bobby Child with ease. His footwork is flawless, as is his acting and singing. He brings a natural charm to the role, which is a delight to watch. His chemistry with Zeinstra is palpable. Zeinstra holds her own and lends her beautiful voice to some of Gershwin’s most famous tunes, including “Someone to Watch Over Me” and “But Not For Me.”

Another standout is Michele Ragusa as Bobby’s mother (aptly named Mother), and later British travel writer Patricia Fodor. Ragusa oozes musical comedy, squeezing every moment out of each and every line she has. Ragusa’s partner in crime during much of the show is Colin Bradbury as Eugene Fodor. Their number “Stiff Upper Lip” is a highlight of the show.

Edward Juvier plays Bela Zangler, the larger than life Ziegfield-esque Broadway showman. Juvier’s duet with Burton in act two, “What Causes That?” brings some of the biggest laughs and raucous applause for the two’s drunken mirror-image comedy routine.

Hailey Thomas plays Irene Roth, Bobby’s NYC fiance. Her no-nonsense, yet sultry take on Irene is a treat to watch. Her big number, “Naughty Baby,” is an attempt by Irene to seduce the local hotel owner, Lank Hawkins. Hawkins is played to musical comedy villain perfection by David Andrew Morton.

As with any old fashioned musical comedy, it would be remiss not to mention the ensemble. They are working incredibly hard, yet make it all look so seamless, one dance number after another. Kudos to Kelli Barclay, whose impressive choreography is the real star of the show. It’s a difficult task to make a show look so big on a relatively small stage.

There is a reason that Goodspeed’s Crazy For You announced its run extension even before opening night. It is a joyful night at the theater, sure to put a smile on anyone’s face.

Crazy For You runs through August 16. Tickets and more information can be found at goodspeed.org.
