A Danbury man died Tuesday afternoon from injuries received after the vehicle he was operating went over an embankment along Mt Pleasant Road.

Newtown Police responded to the area of Mt Pleasant Road at approximately 1:30 pm July 21 in the area of Saw Mill Road, on a report of a single vehicle traveling off the roadway into the adjacent wooded area.

Upon arrival, Newtown Police patrol officers located the vehicle deep in the woods, off the westbound lane of Mt Pleasant Road and approximately 40 feet down a steep embankment.

Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company, Newtown Hook & Ladder Co #1, Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and a paramedic also responded. The crash closed Mt Pleasant between its northern intersection of Saw Mill Road and Hawleyville Road for more than 5½ hours, while police conducted their investigation.

Newtown officers and volunteer firefighters descended the steep embankment to render aid to any occupants of the vehicle. Richard J. Aronson of Danbury was the lone occupant of the vehicle, according to Newtown police.

The vehicle had extreme damage to the passenger compartment as a result of the crash.

Firefighters and police officers extricated Aronson from the vehicle and began life saving measures, in conjunction with NVAC and the paramedic. Aronson was then transported to Danbury Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

The crash is being investigated by the Newtown Police Accident Reconstruction Team, in conjunction with the Newtown Police Detective Bureau. Mt Pleasant fully reopened around 7 pm Tuesday.
