Newtown resident Jim Allen performed this song on the steps of Edmond Town Hall last Monday morning to close the event that formally announced the approval of Newtown's application to establish a state-recognized Cultural District.

This old town's been around for a while

plenty goin' on to make you smile

it used to be just one square mile

my how times have changed

.

Let me paint a picture for you

it's all about the crazy kind of people who

believe in magic, art and science too,

I'll even drop a couple of names

.

Edward Hicks, Mister Merrill as well,

Mary Hawley built a theatre, and I hear tell,

there's music in the park

that will soothe your soul

that summer concert series

run by Amy Mangold

.

and if you’re feeling hungry, after the show

there's only half a million restaurants

where you can go

you're bound to catch a fiddler,

or some kinda jam,

put your hands together

for Mister Tressler and the band

.

There’s a festival brewing at Fairfield Hills

where the beer garden grows

and the people love to chill

don't be shy — come on and get your fill

we got another brewery down on Church Hill

.

And if you ever wonder how the stars go around

there's a kid's museum right here in town

built by our neighbors, it keeps growing too,

thanks to Connie, Phil, and Merredith,

Aaron, and Lisa Yu,

.

Picture that district all the way to the Hook

by the Pootatuck River the pavilion is proof

it keeps gettin’ bigger as the canvas expands

down the street I hear a bluegrass band

.

Mary Hawley sure would be proud

and if the rock 'n roll gets a little too loud

there's peace and quiet, and llamas in the barn,

sound healing and hiking at Sticks 'n Stones Farm

.

So many places, and people to see

why don't you read all about it in The Bee?

Remember the monument, and let's not forget

the man on a mission: Mr John Voket!

.

This old town has been around a while

plenty goin' on to make you smile

it used to be just one square mile

my how times have changed

my how times have changed

Jim Allen closed the press conference at Edmond Town Hall on August 10 with a performance of his song “Crazy Kinda People Who Believe.” The love letter to his hometown celebrated those who believe in and create myriad types of art, and some of the locations people visit to enjoy music, food, education, and other elements found in cultural districts. —Bee Photo, Glass
