Boys' Soccer Wins State Opener, Girls Soccer And Volleyball Matchups Set
Newtown High School's boys' soccer team shut out visiting and No. 21 seed University/Prince Tech of Hartford 4-0 in the opening round of the Class L State Tournament at Blue & Gold Stadium on November 6.
With the win, the No. 12 Nighthawks will visit No. 5 Newington in the second round on Monday, November 9 at 2 pm.
In the 4-0 win, Luke Libero opened the scoring when he headed home a corner kick from Gavin Merrifield. Kaio Dos Santos scored a pair of goals and the Hawks built a 3-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Libero made a run up the right wing and crossed to Kauan Dos Santos for the team's fourth tally.
Starting goalkeeper Emanuel Orozco and Krish Verma combined on the shutout with Verma coming off the bench late to make a nice save. Several freshmen got into the game for some playing time and varsity playoff experience.
Newtown had been off from game action for a couple of weeks but scrimmaged Ridgefield to help prepare for states.
"The morale was high. It wasn't the greatest performance tonight — we got the job done," said NHS Coach Tony Viscuso, adding that he would like to see some better passing and less of the kick-and-run style the team got into at times.
Viscuso pointed out that it is challenging taking on an unfamiliar opponent and that his team found a way to do what it needed to come out on top.
In girls' soccer action, NHS had a first-round bye. The No. 5 Nighthawks will host No. 12 Bristol Eastern in the second round of the Class L tourney on Tuesday, November 10 at 4 pm.
The NHS girls' volleyball team is the No. 15 seed and will host No. 18 Simsbury Tuesday, November 10 at 6 pm.
