SCAN Program Will Be A Pastel Still Life
The Society of Creative Arts of Newtown (SCAN) will have Joel Spector of New Milford as its special guest during its next program, which will take place on Wednesday, November 9, at 7:30 pm. Mr Spector will demonstrate how to use pastel to capture a still life illustration.
The demonstration will take place in the lower meeting room at Newtown Meeting House, 31 Main Street in Newtown (at the flagpole). Non-members are invited, free of charge.
Known for his images of elegance, Joel Spector was born in Havana, Cuba, and came to the United States at the age of 12. He graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and attended the Art Studentsâ League.
He started out in the field of fashion illustration, then moved on to general illustration and has worked with prominent accounts throughout the years.
His work has appeared in books, childrenâs books, magazines, newspapers, advertising and annual reports, and has been used not only in the U.S.  but throughout the world.
Mr Spector is a member of the Pastel Society of America, from which he has won gold medal awards. He has also won awards from the Society of Illustrators in NYC.
His work has been featured in Artistâs Magazine, Pastel International, Society of Illustrators Annual, Best of Pastels and in international magazines. A documentary was produced for Japanese television showing his working progress.
Besides illustration Mr Spector also does commissioned portraits and his work has been included in some prominent collections.
He has taught at FIT, Wooster Community Center for the Arts, and currently at Western Connecticut State University.
