NHS Chess Club Open Tournament

The Newtown High School Chess Club conducted a chess tournament on Thursday, April 14. The event was open to the school community.

NHS students Cole Baldino, Kai Hedin, Alec Lockhart, Mario Pizighelli, Matt Pruner, and Tristan Villamil participated.

A relatively fast time control of 20 minutes for each player to complete all moves was employed. A Swiss system, which pits winners against winners to establish the best player, was also employed during the tournament.

After four rounds, Tristan Villamil emerged with a perfect 4-0 score and was alone in first place. Kai Hedin finished second and Cole Baldino and Alec Lockhart tied for third. Prizes were sponsored by Carminuccio’s, Andrea’s Bakery, and the Holy Cow Ice Cream Shop. In addition, Newtown Culinary offered a free burrito lunch to each of the first- through third-place finishers.

Tournaments are a primary fundraiser for the club at the school. Money raised through the events help the Chess Club to participate in area tournaments. NHS Chess Club advisor Steve Malary said contributions from sponsors like Carminuccio’s, Andrea’s Bakery, and Holy Cow Ice Cream Shop go a long way to help the club.
