To the Editor:

I am writing in response to Ethan Breitling’s letter to the editor, dated October 5, 2008, to set the record straight about the record of Congressman Chris Murphy.

Mr Brietling claimed that Chris Murphy accepted the support of former Governor Rowland. That is simply not true. I called Chris Murphy’s Danbury headquarters and they told me that the accusation is a rumor with absolutely no truth behind it. Chris Murphy did not ask for nor did he accept Rowland’s endorsement.

Additionally, Mr Brietling attacked Chris Murphy’s leadership and ethics. The Newtown Bee does not allow enough space for me to properly reply to this. I believe the best example of our congressman’s effort to restore ethics and fight corruption is his work on the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. “Congressman Murphy introduced the Government Funding Transparency Act, which was signed into law on June 30, 2008. Murphy fought and won this increased disclosure requirement while also supporting measures that would require federal contractors to report overseas violations of criminal law — violations which have previously gone unreported (H.R. 2642, Final Vote Roll Call 432).” (from ChrisMurphy.house.gov/) To be able to accomplish this as a freshman congressperson takes leadership.

Not only does Chris Murphy fight for us in Congress but every weekend he takes the time to fly home to Connecticut to hear directly from the people he represents. He routinely stands outside of Stop & Shops across the district at his version of “Congress on Your Corner” just to hear our concerns and opinions.

According to Mr Brietling, “It takes more than words to be a good Congressman — you must have courage to do what is right.” Both of these examples demonstrate this courage.

I want a Congressman who will stand up for what is right in Congress, who will take time to listen to the issues important to me as a mother, and who does not call on George Bush to raise money for his campaign. And that is the short version of why I support Congressman Chris Murphy this November 4.
