Police are investigating the cause of a two-car accident late Tuesday night in Hawleyville Center which required the extrication of three people, all of whom were hospitalized for treatment of their injuries following the crash.
Reported in serious condition on Wednesday afternoon in Danbury Hospital were Michael Kish, 26, of New Milford, and Robert Klein, Jr, 20, of Monroe. Listed in fair condition was Julio Calvao, 25, of Ansonia.
Hawleyville and Newtown Hook & Ladder firefighters, as well as a paramedic, responded to the crash, which occurred on Hawleyville Road north of the Hawleyville Post Office. Brookfield firefighters also went to the scene.
Police report that a 2000 Audi sedan driven by Calvao was traveling southward on Hawleyville Road (Route 25), as a 2000 Mitsubishi hatchback was traveling northward there at about 11:42 pm.
For an unknown reason, Calvao lost control of the Audi and crossed the centerline of the road, entering the northbound lane. Klein was a passenger in the Audi.
The right side of the Audi then collided with the front end of the approaching Mitsubishi, according to police.
After the impact, the Audi went off the roadway, coming to rest in a brook alongside the roadâs northbound lane, according to police.
All three men needed to be extricated from the two wrecked vehicles by firefighters, after which Newtown and Brookfield ambulance volunteers transported the men to Danbury Hospital. Firefighters needed to cut off the Audiâs roof to free its two occupants. Three ambulances went to the crash.
An initial report of the accident to police placed the collision several miles away, near the intersection of Currituck Road and Main Street, after which the true location of the collision was determined.
