Glorydays - June 21, 1996

This week in 1991

A&D Sports, Curtis Packaging, and The Giants were all respective champions of

the Seniors, Juniors, and Midgets Divisions of the Newtown Softball

Association, all finishing with near-perfect 9-1 records. A&D was led by the

high-powered bats of Krista Halstead and Shannon Brown who both homered in the

season finale for starting and winning pitcher Stacey Zeno. For Curtis

Packaging, Christina Datin went 3-for-3, and Erika Wilson, Danielle Bradshaw,

Krista Bell, and Erin Cavanaugh all had two-hit games to end the year. The

Giants, meanwhile, were led by the strong play of Cathy Byrne, Megan Drake,

Alison Sweetster, and Carissa Rotas in their season finale.

This week in 1986

Newtown High track and field stars Matt Medve, Dave Polgar, and Joe Smith all

placed at the CIAC State Open. Medve, a sophomore, had won the Class L State

Championship in the javelin and went on to place 12th at Opens with a throw of

48.34 meters there. Polgar, who placed seventh in Class L in the mile, took

14th at Opens in the vent with a time of 4:35.93. Smith, finished fourth in

the 1600 and third in teh 3200 at Class L's and went on to take tenth

(4:30.23) and seventh (9:46.75), respectively in the two events at State

Opens.

This week in 1981

The Robins of Robins Market, completed a perfect 12-0 season in the Pee Wees

Division of the Newtown Little League. The team included Steve Baglio, Melanie

Huss, Gerry Finnegan, Joey Melita, Rob Ball, Ryan Lewis, April Maurer, Jason

James, John Ball, Kevin Carden, Tim Kochiss, and Don Kessler.

This week in 1976

Owen Gallagher had two hits including a home run and Ray Tomkins added a

two-hit effort as the Newtown Police beat My Father's Place 15-3 in " B "

Division action from the Sunday Slo-Pitch League. Bob Mosely and Bob Pratt

both homered and Randy and Ed Mucherino and Clay Jurbens all had four hits at

the Bostford Firemen beat Harvey Hubbell, 22-18, in other action. Paul

Montalto had five hits and Ray Clark added four to lead the Pedagogues to a

20-5 win over Village Coffee SHop. Bob Ely homered to lead White Birch to a

9-4 win over Barclay Knitwear.

This week in 1971

Several Newtown youths from the primary special classes at Middle Gate School,

competed at the Connecticut Special Olympics hed in New Haven. Richard

Goessinger won a gold medal in the broad jump, while Harry Agriesto, Melissa

Morris, John McGrath, and Joseph Rant all won silver medals. Lori Messinger,

David Heyde, and Phyliss Rowe all performed well, also.

This week in 1966

The play-by-play call describing the end of a Newtown Little League game

between the Sandy Hook Cardinals and the Newtown Rexall Red Sox in the June

21, issue of the 1966 Newtown Bee read: Red Sox at bat - Cards leading - top

sixth - two men out; Mike Trosan hits down third base line; wild throw to

first, Bob Dickenson on third base heads for home. Right fielder backs up the

play at first, thrwos ball home to make the third out and the final score,

Cards 4, Sox 3.

This week in 1961

The Newtown High baseball team finished its last season in the Housatonic

Valley Schoolman's League with a final record of 8-8. Despite its mediocre

record, the Indians led the league with a team batting average of .322.

Leaging the way for the locals was Roger Fazzino (.385), Richard Sperling

(.371), Robert Wilkes (.350), and Lee Benedict (.325). The team will return

six varsity lettermen when it begins playing in the Western Connecticut

Conference next year.
