The Career Center At Newtown High School Lists Scholarships

The Career Center publicizes all scholarships of which it is notified. A few of the scholarships, typically national ones, request that money be enclosed with the application. The Career Center believes that students should not have to pay to apply for scholarships.

If a student chooses to apply for a scholarship that charges a fee, however, the Career Center strongly advises that he or she first check its authenticity through the FTC Consumer Response Center, www.ftc.gov or 877-FTC-HELP; the National Fraud Information Center, www.fraud.org or 800-876-7060; or the Better Business Bureau, www.bbg.org or 703-276-0100.

Junior League of Greater Waterbury Scholarship — Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to graduating senior girls attending high school in the Greater Waterbury area (includes Newtown) who have demonstrated a commitment to volunteerism through active participation in the community. Candidates should be accepted to an institution of higher learning or professional training. This scholarship is open to all girls regardless of class standing or financial situation. Candidates may get an application from the Career Center and return it to the Career Center by April 3. Newtown High School will forward one student’s application to the Junior League selection committee.

Dennis Malone Memorial Scholarship Award Program — This scholarship award program, sponsored by the Connecticut Parks Association, is named in honor of Dennis Malone, the former president of the Association and founder of the scholarship program. It is open to applicants who are graduating high school seniors planning to attend an accredited two or four year college to pursue a career in park management, forestry, horticulture, agronomy or a closely related field. Scholarships may be awarded up to $1,000, depending on the number of recipients. Selection is based on financial need, academic achievement and involvement in activities related to the intended course of study. Applications are available in the Career Center or may be downloaded from the announcement section at ctparks.org. The application deadline is April 20.

Financial Planning Association Scholarship — One $1,000 scholarship award is available to a college-bound high school senior from a public school in Fairfield County. Applicants should be interested in pursuing a course of study that will result in a degree in business, accounting, or related business field that may lead to a possible career in financial planning. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic achievement, character, financial need, and career potential. Applications are available in the Career Center and must be postmarked by April 3 and received by April 6.

Connecticut Society for Respiratory Care Scholarships — Scholarships for $1,000 will be awarded by this organization to high school seniors who will enter a respiratory therapy education program in Connecticut in September, 2007. Applications are available in the Career Center and must be postmarked by April 5.

Young Agriculturalist Achievement Award — One $1,000 award will be presented to a deserving Fairfield County young person (ages 16–25) who is involved with any of the numerous and varied aspects of agriculture. Applicants are requested to attend the annual Fairfield County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting in October and must not have been a recipient of this award in the past. Applications are available in the Career Center and must be postmarked by April 25.

UConn–New Student Scholarships — Several scholarships are offered to students entering full or part-time study at UConn’s Waterbury campus. Students from NHS may be eligible for some or all of these scholarships and one application may be submitted for several scholarships. The Career Center has applications and they are also available from waterbury.uconn.edu/scholar.html. All applications are due by Friday, March 30.

Newtown Junior Women’s Club Scholarship — The club will award one scholarship for $500 to a high school senior (male or female) from Newtown who is a special education student or planning a career in the field of special education. Applicants must be planning to attend a college, university, or community college on a full-time basis. The award is based entirely upon merit without regard for financial need. The scholarship will be forwarded to the college of his/her choice for the purchase of books. Applications are available in the Career Center and must be postmarked by April 13.

Newtown Scholarship Association — The Newtown Scholarship Association provides scholarship awards to graduating high school seniors from Newtown who plan to continue their education. The scholarships are based on financial need. All applicants will have a personal interview with the Awards Committee. Applications are available in the Career Center and may be downloaded from Naviance. The deadline is April 12.

Hartford Whalers Booster Club Scholarship — One hockey scholarship is available to any graduating senior from Connecticut who plans on attending a four-year college and play collegiate hockey. The scholarship is open to graduating seniors who have excelled in both the classroom and the hockey arena. The Career Center has applications and they are also available at whalerwatch.com. All applications must be postmarked by March 9.

Newtown Bridle Lands Association 2007 Memorial Scholarship — In memory of Linda Souza, NBLA is pleased to offer a $500 scholarship to a graduating high school senior from Newtown High School or the Ellis Clark Regional Agri-Science and Technical Center. Applicants must be a current resident of Newtown or have a parent or guardian who is a current member of NBLA. The applicant must also be accepted to a posthigh school program leading to a degree in equine science, veterinary science, or the environmental sciences including, but not limited to, agriculture, animal husbandry, ecological studies, or forestry. The application deadline is April 1.

USS Connecticut Scholarship Program — This program was named for the State of Connecticut’s Flagship vessel, the submarine USS Connecticut (SSN 22). The ship presents several scholarships annually to eligible members of the present and past crew or their dependents, and to eligible citizens of the state who plan to study at a Connecticut college or university. Last year, 18 merit scholarships were awarded: five to dependents of the ship’s crew and 13 to Connecticut residents who planned to attend college in Connecticut. All scholarship awards are based on a combination of academic merit and involvement in relevant academic, civic, professional, and cultural organizations. Funding for this year’s awards will total $15,000. Complete information and applications are available in the Career Center. The application deadline is May 15.

Education Connection Scholarship — This scholarship program provides two $750 awards to high school seniors who plan to pursue a career that relates to the organization’s stated mission and programs. The organization’s mission statement and programs are detailed on the back of the application. Applicants should also show a long-term commitment to community service. All applications are due by April 5.

Sons of Portugal Scholarship — High school seniors from the greater Danbury area who are of Portuguese descent living at least one full year in the local area may apply for these scholarships. Awards will be made on the basis of Portuguese community involvement, scholastic record, character, and evidence of leadership. Applications are available from portugueseculturalcenter.com or the Career Center. Completed applications must be postmarked by April 1.

Marine Corps League Scholarships — The Hat City Detachment will award two Marine Corps League Scholarships in the amounts of $500 to graduating high school seniors. All applicants must be children or grandchildren of a Marine or former Marine who was honorably discharged. All students must have a 3.0 GPA and plan to attend an accredited college or university. The Career Center has applications and the deadline is April 15.

Connecticut Blue Star Mothers Scholarships — This organization will award three scholarships to graduating high school seniors in 2007. The applicant must have a parent that is or was in the military and be eligible to enter into a university, college, technical, or professional school. Winners will be selected according to financial need, academic record, and community activities. Applications are available from ConnecticutBlueStarMothers.org or the Career Center. The deadline is May 15.

Milton Fisher Scholarship for Innovation and Creativity — This scholarship rewards and encourages local students with exceptional innovation and creative problem-solving skills. High school juniors and seniors from Connecticut are encouraged to apply. Applicants may also be any person entering an undergraduate degree program, vocational school, or technical school or a student presently in the first year of study at an undergraduate degree program. Four to six scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded. Applications are available in the Career Center or may be downloaded from rbffoundation.org/milton-fisher-scholarship. Applications must be postmarked by June 20.

Society of Women Engineers Scholarships — The organization offers renewable scholarships to female high school seniors who plan to study engineering or computer science at an accredited college. The award range is $1,000 to $10,000. Specific application requirements and procedures are available at swe.org/scholarships. The Career Center has basic information. The deadline for freshman scholarships is May 15.
