Parents and friends joined faculty and students of Hawley School on Thursday, May 7, for the grand opening of “Gallery 2008: Up, Up & Away,” the annual celebration of children’s art that takes over the hallway wall space of much of the Church Hill Road school’s first floor.

This year’s art show includes pieces that represent every student at least once: There are drawings by the kindergarteners (“Hawley’s future student artists”); painted snowflakes, papier mache ice cream sundaes, gingerbread cookie piece and Miro-inspired works among the pieces by first grade students; clay pots, unusual color wheels, watercolors and Picasso-style as part of the presentations by the second grade; hot air balloon paintings, Cubist-inspired papier mache sculpture, and symmetric and asymmetric vases within the third grade artistic presentations; and cardboard and foil relief, prints, and a colorful presentation of hot air balloons among the works of the fourth grade students.

“Up, Up & Away” will remain on view until May 30 during school hours. Admission is free; visitors just need to be buzzed into the building and sign in at the front office.
