Fairfield Prepâs Golankiewicz An All-American And State Swimming Champion
Andrew Golankiewicz, 17, of Sandy Hook and a junior on Fairfield Prepâs Swim Team, achieved All-American status in three events at the Connecticut State Open Championship Meet, March 19 at Yale University.
He placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (52.07), was the lead-off swimmer in the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:35.11) and swam the second leg of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay (3:08.05). Golankiewicz also placed 12th in the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.65) to help Prep (458 points) to a second-place finish overall, 28.5 points behind champion Greenwich.
At the March 17 Class LL Championships at Yale University, Golankiewicz collected All-State honors and gold medals in three events.
He won the 100-yard backstroke (52.24) and was a member of two Class LL record-setting winning relays, the 200-yard medley relay (1:34.59) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:07.50). He also placed eighth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.40) as Prep finished runner-up to Greenwich.
On March 5, also at Yale, Prep won its fifth consecutive Southern Connecticut Conference title. Golankiewicz earned All-Conference honors and three gold medals: in the 100-yard freestyle (49.12), 200-yard medley relay (1:39.69), and 400-yard freestyle relay (3:14.86). He also earned All-Conference honors in the 100-yard backstroke for his second-place finish (53.44).
Golankiewicz will compete with his club team, the Wilton Y Wahoos, at the YMCA National Short Course Swimming and Diving Championships in Ft Lauderdale, Fla at the International Swimming Hall of Fame pool, April 6-9.
