Children’s Programs

*Summer reading officially begins on June 26 with two special magic shows by Magician Debbie O’Carroll at 11 am and 1 pm. Free tickets for both performances will be available at the children’s circulation desk at 9:30 am on June 26. The Friends of the Library will also hold a children’s book sale from 9:30 am to 5 pm.

 

YA Programs

*Summer Reading Volunteer Training will be Tuesday or Wednesday, June 5 and 6, from 4 to 4:45 pm. Students entering grades 7–12 in the fall who would like to volunteer for the summer reading program are required to attend a brief training session. Volunteers from previous years are not required to attend training, but still need to fill out application form. Volunteers listen to children discuss the books they are reading and reward incentives. Summer reading begins June 26 and ends August 18. All applications are due on or before June 13.

*“Cool Drinks & Cool Stories” on Monday, June 25, from 2 to 4 pm, is the kickoff for the Teen Summer Reading Challenge for students entering grades 6–12. Relax, beat the heat with a fruit smoothie, then settle back and listen to acclaimed storyteller Jackson Gillman, “The Stand-Up Chameleon.” Full details, prizes and how to participate will be discussed. Signup online.

*Make a beaded anklet or bracelet that glows in the dark with artist Pat Martin on Wednesday, June 27, from 3 to 4:30 pm, for rising grades 6–12. Class is limited to 15; $3 supply fee payable at program. Sign up online.

*Creative Writing Summer Camp for young people who love to write, welcomes back author Sarah Darer Littman. Students entering grades 6–7 will meet from 3:30 to 5:30 pm and students entering grades 8–9, from 6 to 8 pm, on five Thursdays from June 28 to July 26. Students are expected to attend all five class sessions and all sessions allow time for writing and sharing stories, which is an important part of all writing groups. Each group is limited to ten participants. Sign up online.

 

Programs For Adults

*Transition Newtown is hosting the “Sustainable Film Series: The Power of Community: How Cuba Survived Peak Oil,” on Sunday, June 3, 2 to 5 pm, at the library. RSVP by registering for tickets online at www.transitionnewtown.com. There will be an optional potluck snack at 2 pm, with discussion after the film.

*Book Discussion: Nonfiction Book Group: Rational Optimist by Matt Ridley on Tuesday, June 5, at 1 pm; Daytime Book Group: Into the Woods by Tana French on Monday, June 12, at 1 pm in the Antiques Room; and Evening Book Group: Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand on Thursday, June 21, at 7:30 pm in the Old Board Room.

*What’s All The Fuss About Facebook? On Friday, June 8, 9 to 11 am, seniors are invited to learn about Facebook the safe way…by watching. You do not have to create a Facebook account. We will show you why you might be interested in getting started in this hot social media forum. We will show you how you could reconnect with friends from your childhood, as well as your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and also address how you can keep your information limited to only those you allow. Register by calling the library.

*Good Reads for Hot Days: This four-part lecture series of good books with Julie Stern, a retired English and philosophy teacher from Western Connecticut State University, is on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm is in the Antiques Room. The books include In Pharaoh’s Army by Tobias Wolff on June 13; The Soloist by Mark Salzman, June 27; and Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler, July 11. and Hemingway’s Short Stories on July 21.
