Senior Gold 11, Larchmont 10: The Senior Gold team ran their record to 7-1 on the season with a thrilling victory against Larchmont. Once again Bridget Walsh was spectacular in the goal, making 14 saves. The Newtown offense was deadly, led by Maddy Bridges, Meghan Doyle, Brianna Sclafani, Nicole Zaccaro, Brittany Meisenheimer and Lindsay Hoyt. Celia Gold led the team in ground balls and also anchored the defense with Meg Kelleher, Dory Farley, Katie Cappelli and Anna Buzzanca.
Senior Gold 13, Wakeman 7: Newtown outlasted Fairfield Wakeman this past Saturday. The Gold team midfielders controlled the game by beating Wakeman up and down the field consistently and were led by Julia Wiberg, Brianna Sclafani, Brittany Meisenheimer, Nicole Zaccaro, Caroline Caporale and Jess Maturo. Once again Bridget Walsh was stellar in the pipes, stopping 12 shots. The attack was led by Quinn Karp, Meghan Doyle, Maddy Bridges and Lindsay Hoyt.
Ridgefield Orange 9, Senior Blue 7: On a blistering hot day, the Newtown Senior Blue team battled it out with a close game versus Ridgefield. Nevan Gattey, Tessa Leon-Gambetta, Juliana Patelli, Emily Dirga, Emmal Horne, Annie OâConnor, Madison Ventresca and Sara Frascatore all had multiple ground balls to lead Newtown. Gattey, Patelli, Dirga, Horne and Ventresca all made great goals to put Newtown ahead at halftime. On the defensive end, OâConnor, Gattey, Leon-Gambetta and Cameron Morris all had caused turnovers to get the ball back in our attacking end. In the cage, Leah Hushion and Sara Frascatore played solid with three and two saves respectively.
Juniors
Newtown Gold 16, Trumbull 3: Newtown jumped out to a quick lead on the Trumbull girls and never looked back. Newtown dominated in every facet of the game, including the ground ball battle. Julia Haskins scooped six ground balls in the defensive end that limited any second chance scoring opportunities for the opposition. Charlie Condon dished out two assists and netted three goals, and Marcella Daley was the high scorer with five goals. Hanna Rosenthal and Lu Hage each had an assist and controlled play from the midfield. Rachel Tomasino played a solid two-way game from her attack position.
Newtown Gold 8, Ridgefield Black 6: Newtown looked sluggish from the start, but in the end, the girls overcame a feisty and determined Ridgefield squad. Alex Futterman and Liz Hodge shared the goaltending duties and combined for nine saves. Lauren Carrino and Julia Haskins dominated ground balls with six scoops apiece. Lexi Leidlein chipped in with three ground balls and was a force on the defensive end. Rylee Mulligan produced a goal and added an assist. Dylan Zahansky led all scorers with four goals and Jenna Carvahlo chipped in with two goals.
Newtown Gold 11, Greenwich Six A 7: The Golden Girls came up with a tremendous effort to beat a skilled and aggressive Greenwich squad. Alex Futterman made numerous saves throughout the game and controlled play by making precision outlet passes to clear the zone. Newtown held a slim one goal lead at the half but turned up the defensive intensity to dominate play. Lexi Leidlein, Julia Haskins, Lauren Carrino, Cassidy Kortze and Kira Smith all chipped in on defense to limit the Greenwich girls to three second half goals. Haskins and Carrino once again led the team in ground balls by combining for nine on the day. Rylee Mulligan continuously set up scoring opportunities with three assists and a goal. Mulligan, Kortze, Charlie Condon and Marcella Daily were a defensive force in the midfield by intercepting seven total passes and forcing numerous Greenwich turnovers. Katie McCabe provided a key assist and scored a goal. Danielle Samson made a slick one-on-one move to net a goal. Dylan Zahansky led all scorers with three goals and Hayley Lambert dazzled the crowd with a coast-to-coast run that produced a goal and pushed her goal total for the day to two.
Wakeman 10, Blue 4: On Saturday, the Junior Girls Blue 5 team took on the Wakeman 5/6 and lost 10-4. Like the Battle of Thermopylae with no substitutes, the Newtown team endured the overwhelming Wakeman forces and held their ground like King Leonidas and the Spartans. The girls battled the heat and exhaustion to rappel the Wakeman onslaught. Goalies Marissa Lametto and Lina Stubbs blocked shot after shot. Cate Herrick played superior 8m defense, while Tess Hubbard and Keeley Kortze dashed up and down the field. Ultimately the size of the Wakeman team proved overwhelming, resulting in a loss.

Junior Blue at Cheshire tournament
Junior Blue 5, Cheshire 4; Junior Blue 10, Madison 3: The First win required plenty of endurance in a down-to-the-wire win versus Cheshire. Claire Dubois, Kayla OâRorke, Hannah Holmes and Carli Carpenter proved a formidable force to be reckoned with in the 5-4 victory. In the final game, Elizabeth Sally led the attack on Madison with two goals in the 10-3 victory. The 8m defense was spectacular from Morgan Sclafani, Keeley Kortze, Alison Kelleher and Emma Riebe.

Purple Comets: On Sunday, in the scorching heat of Newtownâs Tilson Turf, the Bantam Purple Comets lived the Lacrosse dream. Team members Isabella Butler, Tori Gioiele, Sofia Lebenski, Peri Meeker, Erin Phaneuf, Elena Sughrue, McKenna Ventresca and Kiera Wrage officially transitioned from playing lacrosse to being lacrosse players. Scooping ground balls, passing and catching with repetition and ease.

Madison 6, Newtown 5: Newtown U11 Boys Lightning Gold hosted Madison this past beautiful Sunday afternoon at the Newtown High School stadium field. Lightning Gold boys were filled with enthusiasm to be playing on the NHS field. Madison came out strong in the first quarter of the game, scoring two goals immediately. Newtownâs offense tried to penetrate Madisonâs defense as the Lightning attacks and midis made valiant attempts to score against Madisonâs very talented goalie and defense. Newtown gets on the board with an assist from Declan Sughrue to Tucker Garrity, followed by an assist from Tucker Garrity to Garrett Norberg, tying the score 2-2. Newtownâs goalie, Jack McDermott deflected many goals shot at him to keep Madison from increasing the score. Aiden Coleman, Kyle Sullivan, Nick Cappelli, Kyle Burbank, Vincent Genovese and Riley McCafferty all worked hard for Newtownâs offense. The hard-hitting defensive team of Tanner Stergue, Andre Sokk and Gren Paynter pushed back Madisonâs offensive team. Newtownâs Tucker Garrity shot two goals, along with an assist from Sughrue to Garrity, bringing the score to 6-5 Madison. As the final minutes ticked on, Newtown made every effort to tie up the game, but time ran out.

Newtown Senior Blue 7, Cheshire Senior Red 5: The U15 Boys Blue team traveled to Cheshire on Saturday and came away with a 7-5 win. Newtown was aggressive in shots on goal with David Anderson, Shawn McCarthy and Tommy Elliot each contributing five shots, and the team connected with the back of the net seven times. Devin Luzietti had a strong game contributing three goals and scooping five ground balls. Mark Urso came up with two goals with Tommy Elliott and James Accousti each contributing a goal. Nick Samuelson was like a vacuum coming up with ten ground balls in the game.
