The Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard welcomed six new members following a recent Military Graduation ceremony at its headquarters at Fairfield Hills.

The six-member spring recruit class received its graduating certificates and spurs after completing a 22-week basic training course. The course included military drill and ceremony, mounted and dismounted drill and equine studies.

The new Privates are Cheryl Capoccitti of Shelton, Cynthia Giancaspro of Shelton, Audrey Greenwood of Newtown, Sue Kasmin of Ansonia, Sarah Nestlen of Bridgeport and Barbara Noone of Danbury.

Training Officer Second Lieutenant Jennifer Taylor, Staff Sergeant Paul Mazzara and Drill Sergeant Domingo Quiles taught the recruits Cavalry Drill, proper care of Tack, care and grooming of the horses and Military Courtesy.

After congratulations from Major Gordon Johnson, the new Privates joined the Troop formation. Graduation ceremonies included the historic cavalry tradition of having each new Trooper open a champagne bottle with a saber, and a round of toasting followed.

Command Sergeant Major Joseph Sevigny and Sergeant Major Gary Salmon of the Connecticut National Guard attended the ceremony, along with former Second Company Commander Lt. Colonel Peter Moritz and retired Second Company Captain George Marks.

Family and friends of the new Troopers also enjoyed snacks and cake. Major Gordon Johnson welcomed the new Troopers and thanked their families and friends for their support.

The Second Company is an all-volunteer state militia unit, serving the Governor and the State of Connecticut under the direction of the Connecticut National Guard. It is one of the oldest cavalry units in the United States and members are dedicated to preserving Cavalry traditions.

The Guard is now accepting applications for the 2007 fall Recruit Class. Applicants must be between 18 and 55 and in good physical condition and they must pass a background check. No experience is necessary.

A Recruit Open House will be Saturday, July 21, at Guard headquarters.

Applicants who are accepted as recruits will begin a 24-week training program on August 25. All interested parties are encouraged to attend the Open House to meet training staff and also to see the facility and its mounts.
