Awards Ceremony Highlights Outstanding NMS Students And Staff

By Eliza Hallabeck

Newtown Middle School Principal Diane Sherlock welcomed the seventh and eighth grade students assembled before her on the front lawn of the Queen Street school, as the 2010-11 awards ceremony began on Monday, June 20.

Many students were recognized during the ceremony for exemplary projects, dedication, and ability. Staff members were also recognized during the ceremony for different accomplishments, such as foreign language instructor Nicole Morris who is retiring at the end of this school year after more than 30 years in the school district.

NMS Parent Teacher Association (PTA) President Maggie Conway was also thanked by Ms Sherlock during the ceremony for her two years as president. “Thank you, Mrs Conway, from the bottom of my heart,” said Ms Sherlock.

Some students were asked to stand where they were seated to be recognized for their achievements, such as students who received a “student of the month” award from the Newtown Rotary during the 2010-11 school year.

Newtown Board of Realtors President Lisa Hintzen, of Prudential Connecticut Realty, was one of multiple special guests at the event. Ms Hintzen presented eighth grade students Baxter Hankin and Arnav Singh a check for $500 from the National Board of Realtors for the students placing first in the regional School of the Future Architecture competition, sponsored by the National Association of Realtors in partnership with the Council of Educational Facilities Planners, International.

“The Newtown Board of Realtors is proud to present the National Board of Realtors check of $500 [to these students],” said Ms Hintzen to Baxter and Arnav.

Baxter and Arnav worked with fellow NMS students Lyle Lee and Sean Lee to design a school for the future for the project. Each student team in the competition submits a project model, a video, and a 750-word description of the project.
