NHS Skaters Carry Six-Game Winning Streak Into Final Week

Newtown High School’s hockey team won its fifth and sixth straight games this past week, blanking Bolton-Coventry-Lyman Memorial 4-0 on February 18 edging EO Smith-Tolland-Windham 4-3 on February 21.

The Nighthawks carried a 13-4 overall record into the final two games of the regular campaign, a Wednesday home game with Guilford (after The Bee sports section went to press), and a Saturday, February 26 clash with New Fairfield-Immaculate at 3:20 pm — both at Danbury Ice Arena. The South-West Conference Tournament will be held March 3 and 5.

In the win over Bolton-Coventry-Lyman Memorial, goaltender Mike Allwein got his first varsity shutout by kicking aside all 21 shots he faced and, in doing so, lowered his season goals against average to a stingy 1.98. Allwein got all of the offensive support he would need on a first-period goal by Christian Blais, assisted by Tyler Hanley. Parker Rodbell added two power play goals and Ted Benoit capped the scoring. Blais also had two assists, and Evan Isaacs and Justin Corsello added assists. Coach Paul Esposito was pleased with the play of Alex Kelly and teammates in what he called a chippy game.

The win over EO-Smith-Tolland-Windham was made possible by a comeback effort as Newtown overcame 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to build a 4-2 advantage before hanging on.

Benoit scored the team’s third and fourth goals, exactly five minutes apart, in the third period to propel the Hawks to the win. Blais and Owen Sandercox also found the back of the net. Brett Klein had two assists, and Blais, Jake Solomons, Kelly, and Harmon Coffey all added helpers.
