OBITS (Clifford; Gronberg; Morris; Grant; Thompson; Gertsch)
Timothy F. Clifford
Timothy F. Clifford, 85, father of James Clifford of Newtown, died March 8 at
the Cleveland Clinic on The Water in Florida.
He was the husband of Florence Frank Clifford and a resident of Ansonia and Ft
Lauderdale, Fla.
Mr Clifford was born in Ansonia on July 8, 1912, son of the late James and
Albina Cooney Clifford.
He was employed as a machinist at the Anaconda American Brass Company and was
a communicant of the Church of the Assumption.
Besides his wife and son, he is survived by two grandchildren, one
great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, John and Arthur Clifford.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, March 14, at 8:45 am
in the Church of the Assumption. Burial will be in Mt St Peter's Cemetery.
Contributions in memory of Mr Clifford may be made to the American Heart
Association in care of the John T. Bennett Funeral Home, 91 North Cliff
Street, Ansonia, Conn.

Tula L. Gronberg
Tula L. Gronberg, 60, of Sandy Hook, died March 6 at Walter Reed Medical
Center in Washington, D.C. She was the wife of James Gronberg of Honey Lane.
Mrs Gronberg was born on September 1, 1937, in Rice Lake, Wis., a daughter of
the late Thorvald and Viola Howard Skar. She graduated from the University of
Wisconsin-Stout with a bachelor of science degree in dietetics and worked as
an independent consultant for various geriatric healthcare facilities in
Virginia, Wisconsin, and Connecticut.
Mrs Gronberg did extensive volunteer work during her life. She was a member of
the Order of the Eastern Star and the Newtown Woman's Club (GFWC), served as
an alternate on the Commission on Aging, and was a member of St James Lutheran
Church in Southbury.
The Gronbergs were preparing to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary in
May.
In addition to her husband, Mrs Gronberg is survived by two children, Paula
Osorio of New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Luke Gronberg of Alma Center, Wis.; and
two grandchildren, Peter James Osorio and Thomas Andrew Osario.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 14, at Trinity Lutheran
Church in Birchwood, Wis. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Birchwood.
Appleyards Home for Funerals in Rice Lake, Wis., is handling the funeral
arrangements.
A memorial service will be held at St James Lutheran Church in Southbury on
Saturday, March 28, at 3 pm.

Elmer J. Morris
Elmer J. Morris, 78, father of Alice L. Miller of Newtown, died March 7 at the
UPMC Bedford Memorial Hospital in Pennsylvania.
A resident of Everett, Pa., Mr Morris was the husband of Olla Retta Imler
Morris.
He was born in Clearville, Pa., on June 18, 1919, a son of Jacob Elmer and
Elmira Smith Morris.
A US Army veteran of World War II, he served in Company E of the First
Infantry in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.
Before his retirement, Mr Morris was a foreman for Connecticut Foundations of
New Milford.
In Pennsylvania, he was a member of The Village Church, Assembly of God, in
Bedford.
Besides his wife and daughter, he is survived by two sons, John R. Morris of
Everett, Pa., and Elmer Thomas Morris of Washington, Conn.; two brothers,
Homer Morris of Chambersburg, Pa., and Leonard Morris of Clearville, Pa.; four
sisters, Evelyn Whetstone and Minnie Whetstone, both of Manns Choice, Pa.,
Betty McCreary of Morresville, Ind., and Beda Rose of Beallsville, Pa.; four
grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held March 11 at The Village Church, Assembly of God, Bedford.
Burial will be in Bedford County Memorial Park with military rites conducted
by the Fort Bedford Honor Guard.

Elizabeth S. Grant
Elizabeth S. Sheeley Grant, 83, mother of Jeffrey Grant of Newtown, died March
5 at Hamden Health Care Center in Hamden.
Mrs Grant, of Hillside Village, Cheshire, was the wife of Arthur David Grant.
She was born in Table Rock, Neb., November 16, 1914, a daughter of Carlton A.
and Flora Inez Purinton Sheeley.
Formerly of Seattle, Wash., she lived in Connecticut for the past four years.
Mrs Grant graduated from the University of Washington in 1936 and was a member
of the Pinochle Club and the Milk Fund, both of Seattle.
Besides her son Jeffrey, she is survived by two other sons, David Grant of
Cheshire and Steven Grant of Pine, Colo.; a brother, Paul Sheeley of Calif.; a
sister, Gertrude Tibbetts of Seattle; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services and burial will be conducted at the convenience of the
family.
The Slater Funeral Home, 242 South Main Street, Cheshire, is in charge of
arrangements.

Josephine Thompson
Josephine Scott Thompson, 74, mother of Robert Thompson, Jr, of Newtown, died
March 6 in her home in Trumbull after a long illness.
Mrs Thompson was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and resided in Trumbull for the past
29 years. She was the wife of Robert Thompson.
She was a former employee of American Airlines in Buffalo, N.Y. For three
years she was associated with the State of Connecticut Nursing Home Ombudsman
office as a volunteer patient advocate. She was a past treasurer of the
Trumbull PTA Council.
Besides her husband and son, she is survived by three other children, Claudia
Steeves of Glastonbury, and Phyllis Rolleri and Scott Thompson of Trumbull; a
brother, Donald Scott of Metairie, La.; nine grandchildren including Melissa,
Audrey and Corrine Thompson of Newtown; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held March 9 in the Cyril F. Mullins Trumbull Funeral
Home and in St Theresa Church. Interment was in Nichols Village Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to the St Theresa Scholarship
Fund, 5301 Main Street, Trumbull 06611.

Verena Gertsch
Verena Gertsch, 96, widow of the late Albert Gertsch, died March 4 at her home
on Ferris Road, Newtown.
She was born in Switzerland on September 26, 1901, a daughter of Friedrich and
Emma Ellenberger Nyfeler.
She immigrated to the United States in 1927 and had been a Newtown resident
since 1977. She was employed as a seamstress for many years.
She is survived by her son, Erich A. Gertsch of Newtown, with whom she lived;
four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family. Cremation was
in Mt Grove Crematory, Bridgeport.
Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, handled the arrangements.
