Spiking The Competition

The Nighthawks beat Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport, Stratford, and Joel Barlow of Redding — all by 3-0 scores — this past week to carry a 13-3 overall record (11-9 in South-West Conference play) into the middle of this week.

In the win over Kolbe on October 20, Newtown rolled 25-15, 25-10, and 25-19. Amanda Rowan compiled 11 kills and two service aces; Emma Herring had four kills, and Carly Iwanicki had 4 kills and five digs.

Newtown beat Stratford 25-11, 25-15, and 25-20 on October 21. Abbey Doski had seven digs and five aces, Herring had eight kills, four aces, and two blocks, and Jess Lynch tallied 22 assists and eight digs.

Against Barlow on October 25, Newtown prevailed 25-15, 25-20, and 25-23. Lynch had 20 assists and 6 digs, Doski had 20 digs and two aces, and Iwanicki added 13 digs and five kills.

Newtown had won seven straight 3-0 scores heading into Wednesday’s clash with Bunnell of Stratford (after The Bee sports section went to press). NHS is scheduled to close out the regular campaign at Masuk of Monroe on Friday, October 29. The SWC playoffs get underway on Monday, November 1.

Field Hockey Wins

The NHS field hockey team, after suffering five 1-0 defeats, came out on the winning end of a 1-0 game, edging visiting Barlow in overtime on October 21. The Nighthawks tied New Fairfield 1-1 on October 25 to carry a 5-8-2 record into Wednesday’s scheduled season-finale against non-conference foe Ridgefield.

Swim Team Beaten

Newtown High’s swimmers battled but came up short, 95.5-85.5 at always-tough Pomperaug in Southbury on October 22. The Nighthawks (6-3) were scheduled to have a makeup meet at New Fairfield on October 28. Newtown will compete in the SWC Championships this coming week with the diving competition slated for 6 pm on Wednesday, November 3, and the swimming events scheduled for Saturday, November 6 at 4 pm — both at Masuk High School.
