Matthew J. McCarthy, Sr, 90, of Fairfield, died on September 12 at St Vincent’s Medical Center. Mr McCarthy was born in Rumford, Maine, to Matthew and Mabel Lavertu McCarthy. He was a longtime Fairfield resident.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Helen Killory McCarthy of Fairfield; five children, Matthew J. McCarthy, Jr, and his wife, Arlene, of Sandy Hook, Patricia Olsen of Fairfield, Joanne Ryan and her husband, Mark, of Trumbull, Mary Eileen Findorak and her husband, Michael, of Stratford, and Richard W. McCarthy of Bridgeport; 13 grandchildren, Michael, Stephen, David Ryan, Sara, Daniel, Amy, Adam, and Catherine Findorak, Christopher McCarthy, Matthew J. McCarthy, III, Patrick, Meaghan, and Shelia McCarthy. He was predeceased by two grandsons, Kevin Ryan and Brian Olsen, four sisters, and one brother.

Mr McCarthy graduated from Holy Cross in 1938 and received his masters and PhD from Boston University. He retired in 1986 from Fairfield University as a professor emeritus. An avid Notre Dame football fan, he was also a member of the Bridgeport Bridge Club where he was proud to be a Life Master.

Funeral services will be Saturday, September 16, at 9:30 am, at in Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 545 Stratfield Road in Fairfield. Interment will be in Lawncroft Cemetery. Friends may call Friday, September 15, from 4 to 8 pm, in the Cyril F. Mullins Trumbull Funeral Home, 399 White Plains Road in Trumbull.
