The Declaration Of A Principle
To the Editor:
Joseph E. Vallely, in his recent letter to The Bee [4/15/11 Letter Hive, âGovernment Derives Its Power From Godâ], castigates President Obama for asserting âthat government derives its power from âthe consent of the governed.ââ According to Mr Vallely, the principle that the power to govern comes from the âconsent of the governedâ is âmorally, theologically, and ultimately wrong.â His letter implies that this concept has been invented by Mr Obama as a rationale for the advancement of his liberal agenda.
The writer might be surprised to learn that the concept he so abhors actually appears rather prominently in the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence, adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776:
âWe hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.â
