ALTERMANN GALLERIES WILL OFFER SET PRICE/AUCTION JUNE 27–28 w/4 cuts

SANTA FE, N.M. — Altermann Galleries’ 28th annual Set Price Auction will take place June 27–29. The set price session on Friday, June 27, titled the American Western Art Classic, will consist of more than 75 works of art including work by William Acheff, Harley Brown, John Jarvis, Zhou Shu Liang, Kim Mackey, Martha Pettibrew, Sonya Terpning and Kim Wiggins.

The American Western Art Classic works will be sold by the draw method. A reception will be from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the gallery’s 225 Canyon Road location on Friday. The drawing will be at 6:30 pm.

The auction will take place Saturday, June 28, at the Santa Fe Hilton; the preview will begin at 9 am and the auction will commence at 2 pm.

A highlight is a casting of Alexander Phimister Proctor’s “Stalking Panther,” inscribed “Model.” Several authorities on the bronzes of Proctor are in agreement that this work was the foundry’s example, used as a quality control in making other castings of the well-known bronze.

Another significant offering is an 18¼-by-24¼-inch oil on canvas by Frank Tenney Johnson, “At Dawn — Morning Clouds” that has been in the same collection since it was acquired from the artist. Also available by Johnson will be an early landscape watercolor that was given to the present owner’s parents by the artists. Accompanying the lot is correspondence to the family from Vinnie Johnson, the artist’s widow, and studio photographs of the artist and his wife.

Some of the other deceased masters whose works will be offered include Theodore Bauer, O.E. Berninghaus, Eanger Irving Couse, Cyrus Dallin, William Herbert Dunton, Carl Kauba, W.R. Leigh, Frederic Remington, Olaf Seltzer, Joseph Henry Sharp and Olaf Wieghorst.

Altermann will offer a large selection of bronzes by Harry Jackson, including several sculptures seldom or never offered at auction. One of the most rare and sought after is “The Burial,” a limited edition of five, with the first casting being the permanent collection of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody, Wyo.

Many of the artists who are past or present members of the Cowboy Artists of America, the National Academy of Western Art and who have exhibited in the Prix de West Invitational and the Masters of the American West exhibition will have examples of their art in the auction.

Highly anticipated offerings are three significant paintings by Martin Grelle, including “Warriors Quest,” oil, 30 by 40 inches; “Feathers, Furs and Paint,” acrylic 12 by 12 inches; and “Prairie Watcher,” oil, 30 by 24 inches.

The gallery is continuing its venture into photography, with this auction’s offering of Edward Curtis’s “The Vanishing Race” and contemporary cowgirl portrait “Julie Hagen,” 1981, by Jay Dusard.

Northern New Mexico artists will have strong representation, including Fremont Ellis, Josef Bakos, Carl Redin, Rod Goebel, Charles Reynolds, Patrocino Barela, Ben Turner and Harold Joe Waldrum.

Highlights of the Texas landscape offerings will be two major Hill Country bluebonnet paintings by Porfirio Salinas and Robert Wood; both were executed during prime period for the artists.

Altermann Galleries continues to expand its presentation of works by Andy Warhol from the well-known “Cowboys and Indians” portfolio. Included in the auction are “Geronimo,” “Custer” and “Teddy Roosevelt.”

International subject matter and cityscapes will have a substantial selection, including paintings by Edouard Cortes, Richard Schmid, Chen Chi and Kim Wiggins, with paintings by Elias Rivera, Mian Situ and Clark Hulings. Numerous works by Eric Sloane will be offered, including several that were commissioned by Al Gore Sr (father of Al Gore Jr) There will also be an oil painting by Thomas Hart Benton, depicting Martha’s Vineyard executed in the early 1920s.
