Experts Cover Horse Care At Post

WATERBURY — Jessica Normand from Smartpac gave a presentation on the correct use of supplements in an equine diet at the first of three sessions of the “Quiz the Experts Lecture Series” at Post University, last Friday night.

Normand went over the areas of focus for supplements from arthritis to gastric ulcers, hoof growth to insulin resistance. She explained that more research needs to be done on equine digestion and that a basically sound diet of good quality hay – which should make up most of the nutrition – and feeding smaller, more frequent grain meals per day (which is more in line with the way the equine digestion evolved) usually keep the horse in good nutritional health.

However, there are occasions in which supplements can play a useful part in keeping a horse happy, healthy and able to continue his working life more easily. Normand stressed that the quality of the various products sold is important, as is the actual make-up of the feed additives used.

The next lecture will be Friday, March 28 at 7:15 pm, when  a panel will give advice on “How to Buy/See The Performance Horse.” This lecture will be held in room 201 at the Drubner Center at Post University (Route 63, exit 17 off I-84).

Tickets for each session ($10) are available at the door. Admission is free for Post students. Proceeds benefit equine scholarships and the Equine Program at Post.
