Botsford Man Arrested After Restaurant Incident
Police report they arrested a Botsford man on multiple charges following an incident near King’s Breakfast & Lunch Restaurant at 265 South Main Street at about 4 pm on May 10, in which the man allegedly brandished a firearm, threatening to kill the restaurant’s owner.
Following the incident, police arrested Collins Verstegen, 51, of 271 South Main Street, charging him with first-degree threatening, second-degree reckless endangerment, first-degree criminal mischief, and second-degree breach of peace.
Police said the tense situation in the restaurant parking lot caused them to evacuate the restaurant and to close the section of South Main Street lying between Waterfall Plaza and Button Shop Road for about a half hour, until the incident was resolved.
After making the threats against the restaurateur, Verstegen had entered his nearby house and refused to surrender to the multiple police officers who had responded to the incident, police said.
Eventually, Verstegen ran out the back door of his house, after which police caught him after a brief foot chase.
Police said they then learned that the weapon which Verstegen had been brandishing was an empty BB pistol.
While being transported to the police station, Verstegen slipped out of his seatbelt and then broke open the right-rear passenger window on a police cruiser, police said. He was transported to the hospital for treatment of injuries caused by his breaking open the window, police said.
Police then held Verstegen on $10,000 bail for a May 11 arraignment in Danbury Superior Court.
At his arraignment, Verstegen pleaded not guilty to all charges. He was later being held on $50,000 bail for a May 19 court appearance.
