Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multi-Purpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of The Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Wal-Mart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*DINNER AND A MOVIE on Tuesday, December 2, from 4 to 6 pm. Bring a dessert. Cost is $5; RSVP 270-4310.

*With the holidays coming, join us in making CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS on Tuesday mornings at 10 am.

*CHRISTMAS IN HAWAII show at the Hun Key Lau Restaurant and Dinner Theater in Chicopee, Mass., Wednesday, December 3. Enjoy lunch, Polynesian dancers, and Christmas songs. Next stop is to the Christmas Tree Shop and then onto Bright Nights at Forest Park, with 2½ miles of lighted Christmas displays. Depart at 9:45 am; cost is $68.

Upcoming Programs

*Share some of the most memorable moments in dramatic literature with RICHARD CLARK as he recreates Shakespeare’s Greatest Hits in “The Lunatic, The Lover, and The Poet” on Tuesday, December 9, at 1 pm.

*BINGO on Wednesday, December 10 at 1 pm.

*ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY at The Waterview on Thursday, December 11, from 11 am to 3 pm. Enjoy music and entertainment, gourmet buffet, 50/50 raffle, and champagne toast. Cost is $35; call for reservations 270-4310.

 

Day Trips

Tickets are still available for the following day trips.

*See the UConn Women’s Basketball Team at Madison Square Garden on Sunday, December 14, at 2:30 pm. The ticket also includes admission to the Rutgers vs Army game at noon. Time of departure is to be announced.

*Ace in the Hole presents BIG BAND NEW YEAR’S BASH on Tuesday, December 30, in North Haledon, N.J. A New Year’s Eve party in the afternoon with lunch, favors, balloons, champagne toast, daylong dancing, and comedian Danny Curtis. Depart at 8:45; $94 per person.

 

Recurring Activities

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday morning from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 9:30 am, with Mary Matern.

*BOARD GAME DAY is every Thursday at 1 pm. Coffee or tea and snack will be supplied.

*MOVIE TIME on Fridays at 1 pm. Enjoy a good “favorite” movie with a friend. We supply the video and popcorn.

Monday: AM pinochle, hatha yoga, exercise, PM computer classes, chorus group.

Tuesday: AM pinochle, country-western line dancing; PM Tai Chi & Chi Kung, bowling, walking for fitness, computer classes, crafts.

Wednesday: AM exercise; PM bingo, crafts.

Thursday: AM Breakfast Club, hatha yoga, cards; PM bowling, walking for fitness, board games.

Friday: AM advanced mah jongg, sewing, quilting, PM knitting, cards.

 

Menu For Week Of

December 1–5

Monday: Succulent pork loin served over apple stuffing topped with gravy, green beans, applesauce garnish, seedless rye read, apricot halves.

Tuesday: Chicken parmesan, penne with marinara sauce, tossed salad with tomato and Italian dressing, parmesan cheese, garlic bread, chocolate chip cookie.

Wednesday: Chicken gumbo soup with crackers, fish with Florentine sauce, cut sweet potato, California blend vegetables, whole wheat dinner roll, seasonal fresh fruit.

Thursday: Dave’s meatloaf with gravy, mashed potatoes, mixed vegetables, wheat bread, chocolate pudding with whipped topping.

And for planning ahead—

Monday: December 8: Honey roasted chicken quarter, rosemary roasted potato, green beans, dinner roll, apple juice, fruit cocktail.

Tuesday: December 9: Beef stew served over egg noodles, tossed salad with cucumber and French dressing, whole wheat bread, seasonal fresh fruit.
