Veterans’ Day Observances

There will be two formal ceremonies to honor Veterans’ Day in Newtown on November 11. The public is invited to both events.

At 9:30 Tuesday morning, the Persian Gulf War Memorial Committee will host its dedication ceremony for the Persian Gulf War Memorial Monument. This will be the official unveiling of the newest portion of the Soldiers & Sailors Monument on Main Street, at the head of Hanover Road.

The names of 25 residents who served during the 1990–91 Persian Gulf War have been inscribed on a plaque that has joined the others carrying the names of Newtown men and woman who served in previous foreign wars.

At 11:11 am, VFW Post 308 will host its traditional Veterans’ Day ceremony. Don Monckton is again coordinating this year’s event, with help from the post’s men’s and ladies’ auxiliaries. The short ceremony will include short speeches by First Selectman Joe Borst and Representative Julia Wasserman. A buffet lunch will follow.

The post is at 18 Tinkerfield Road, off Wassermann Way; telephone 426-9316.
