Late Fall Bird Walk

SOUTHBURY — The end of the fall migration is near and newly arriving winter birds will be in abundance when Bent of the River Audubon Center hosts a Late Fall Bird Walk.

Join Audubon Education Specialist Jim Drennan for the walk on Wednesday, November 19, from 9:30 to 11 am, through the nature center’s fields and along the Pomperaug River in search of newly arriving American tree sparrows, red-breasted nuthatches, white-throated sparrows, and dark-eyed Juncos.

Red-tailed hawk and bald eagle migration will be in peak by mid-November as the raptor migration winds down for the year, and there is also a good chance of seeing a number of red-tails and a bald eagle or two.

Eruptions of Northern birds have already begun, as large numbers of pine siskins have been spotted here, and a few purple finches have been regulars at the Audubon Center’s feeding station. Participants may even be lucky enough to see some crossbills and redpolls as they make their way south.

This will be an easy paced walk on generally flat terrain, but be prepared by wearing sturdy shoes or hiking boots. The weather is sure to be cold, so dress accordingly.
