Standing Together In Tough Times

To the Editor:

As co-presidents of the Head O’ Meadow PTA, we wanted to take a moment to publicly express our whole-hearted agreement with the sentiment expressed in the letter written by Denise LeMay, published in last week’s Letter Hive [“Support Local Businesses”]. These are difficult economic times for Newtown’s families, businesses, and schools, and we need to stick together and support each other as much as possible!

At HOM, we are fortunate to have an extremely active PTA and a large number of families that participate in our events. For an evening such as the Dinner Dance and Auction, our largest social and fundraising event, we generally have between 150 and 200 people in attendance (in addition to auction items). We would like nothing more than to hold this event in Newtown to support our businesses (and, frankly, make it more convenient for our attendees), but exhaustive research has shown that Newtown establishments simply do not have the capacity we require. We are very excited about the new businesses and buildings that are opening in town... and we always look in Newtown first when planning for the next year, considering new options in format and style for every event.

It is also important to mention that the hosting of the event is only a part of the story. The HOM Dinner Dance and Auction provides a vehicle for local business to make families aware of their services and products while donating to a great cause — the education of Newtown children. Over the past decade our fundraising programs have allowed us to supplement Newtown Public School budgets by providing items and services such as: monthly cultural arts performances and scheduled field trips for grades one through four; a defibrillator; replacement playground equipment; a library circulation desk; and library shelving.

Last but not least, let’s remember that it is through the tireless efforts of our committed volunteers that these program are possible. We always welcome new ideas and new volunteers, they are truly the backbone of our community — if any member of the HOM school community would like to join the PTA or a particular project committee, please don’t hesitate to contact one of us directly! We do all need to stand together in these tough times, and sharing ideas and opinions is a great place to start. Thank you again Newtown for your continued support of our children and our community. We simply cannot do this without you!
