Fred J. Goebel

Former NYC Firefighter

Fred John Goebel, 92, of Rutland, Vt., died August 21 at the Rutland Regional Medical Center. He was born November 14, 1915, in New York City, the son of Frank W. and Barbara (Bruckner) Goebel.

Survivors include two sons, Fred J. Goebel of Newtown and Richard W. Goebel of Los Angeles; a daughter, Irene B. Goebel of Rutland; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Lillian (Koteiwo) Goebel on April 1, 2000.

He was employed as a firefighter in New York City for 20 years and later worked as a machinist and machine shop foreman in New York and Connecticut. For ten years he was a Cub and Boy Scout leader and Explorer advisor.

He was an avid model railroader, Alpine skier, golfer, and enjoyed swimming and playing ping-pong. Mr Goebel was a fine woodworker, cabinetmaker, and marquetry (decorative inlaid woodwork) enthusiast.

Mr Goebel was a substitute teacher and taught industrial arts during the day, and photography to adult evening education classes at the Stafford Technical Center.

The funeral service was held August 23 in the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Rutland, with the Reverend Sharon Hughes, pastor, officiating.

Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Rutland.

Tossing Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
