Walking The Dog Bolsters New Dog Pound Fund

Dog lovers still have time this week and next to sign up for the Dogathon, reminds Canine Advocates of Newtown (CAN) President Virginia Jess. She hopes the prizes will entice a few more people to download a signup sheet from her organization’s website (CanineAdvocates.org) and start walking to support the Newtown dog pound.

Her message? “Leash your dog, get some sponsors, and start walking,” she said.

Previously unannounced prizes include a photo session with the dog and walker (one half hour with a photographer and a print package of 4 x 6 prints, with one blown up for a frame), a “Party for Ten” donated by Hydrangea Blue, a set of four die-cast metal trucks (an Ertl 1939 Dodge Airflow, an Ertl 1934 Diamond T Doodle Bug tanker, a Texaco Maxwell touring car, and a Texaco 1930 Diamond T tanker), and a large stuffed golden retriever donated by The Toy Tree.

The job is no more demanding than the few calories necessary to make it around the block. According to the signup sheet, walkers can help raise money for vet care and other necessities for cats and dogs at the Newtown pound by receiving a pledge for each mile walked. The Dogathon ends June 8.

Checks from participants, due by June 15, should be made out to Canine Advocates. Winners will be announced at the CAN Family Fun Day — another fundraising event to benefit the pound — at Newtown Middle School on June 22.
