WESTON â Freshman diver Kim Mayers put together her best performance of the season with a 167.85-point performance and freshman diver Tierney Carey qualified for the South-West Conference championships with 128-point performance to help the Newtown High School swim team sweep the event on Tuesday afternoon at Weston.
But it wasnât enough to help the Nighthawks defeat the Lady Trojans. The âHawks fell to 5-7 on the dual meet season with a 98-88 loss. Freshman diver Britta Cedergren scored 120.55 points to take third.
The âHawks captured five first-place finishes on Tuesday, but it was their inability to take a first in the three relay events â being outscored by 10 points in those events â which may have hurt them the most.
Freshman Amy Robinson also qualified for the SWCs with a 1:02.49, first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle â the first time she has performed in that event this year. Melissa Rushefski (200 freestyle and 500 freestyle) and Margaret Ashey (200 individual medley) were also individual winners.
Robinson was the only individual winner in the loss to Seymour, capturing first in the 100-yard backstroke. Robinson was also second in the 50-yard freestyle while Rushefski (200 freestyle), Caitlin Malloy (100 butterfly), Liz Portnoy (100 freestyle), Ashey (500 freestyle) and Jessica Remitz (100 breaststroke) all grabbed second-place finishes.
