One Man's Accomplishment
One Manâs
Accomplishment
To the Editor:
I would like to congratulate the man who spent the day on Tuesday making the budget fail. He certainly succeeded, and I truly believe the 80-something vote margin can be attributed to him. He told me, and I overheard him tell several others, that he didnât want to hurt the kids or the schools. In fact, he was aiming for opposite. He didnât want the education budget to get hurt by âoverspendingâ on a new town hall.
The problem is that every No vote looks the same when the votes are counted. So the council sees the budget fail, and cuts money from it, including from the Board of Education. They canât cut the $10 million town hall from the budget to please this man, because it isnât there. It is not a part of the budget.
So, what did this man accomplish? He wasted some more of the townâs money, because they will need to spend it on yet another referendum. He spread lies, confused Newtown residents, and misinformed well-meaning voters. And, oh yeah, he hurt those kids he was trying to help, because the school budget was surely cut again. I hope heâs proud of all he accomplished.
Sincerely,
Sarah Hemingway
