Great Pootatuck Duck Race Is Less Than A Month Away

Are you counting down the days? Are you buying your tickets? Are you tracing out the route the ducks will take as they traverse the Pootatuck River?

Only 22 days remain after this Friday to the great splash down day. On Saturday, May 26, the Seventh Annual Great Pootatuck Duck Race will once again come Newtown’s way. Sponsored by Newtown Lions Club, this festive event will be held from 10 am to 2 pm at Mike Porco’s lot on Glen Road.

Magicians, face painters, musicians, signers, and dancers will be either performing or working the crowd. Andrea’s Pastry Shop will again be handing out delicious cookies. There will also be a number of children’s games, including a moon bounce. Numerous community groups will be present, talking about their activities or selling their wares.

Twenty-five terrific prizes will be given this year. First prize is a 42-inch plasma television set; second is a weekend in New York with hotel, dinner and theater tickets; third is a $600 gift certificate for Sapphire Teeth Whitening Service given by Dr Richard Fisher at a value of $600.

Other prizes include a giclée print by local artist Ruth Newquist, a Sony PlayStation 3, a family pool pass, a photograph by Frank Gardner, karate lessons, membership certificates for the Gym at Newtown, a Photoland portrait sitting certificate, two-year subscription to The Bee, 20 movie passes for Edmond Town Hall, and gift certificates to The Villa, Lexington Gardens, Newtown Chocolatier, My Place Restaurant, Avance Esthetique, and Robert Anthony Salon.

Tickets are still $5 each and can be found many places including C.H. Booth Library, Berkshire Motors, Drug Center, Fun Cuts, Sandy Hook Hair Company, Mocha, Newtown Car Wash, Red Brick Tavern, Sandy Hook Liquor, The Toy Tree, Katherine’s Kitchen, Newtown Deli, Yankee Wine and Liquor, Dodgingtown Liquor, Village Barber Shop, M.C. Cleaners, and Bagel Delight.

If there are any tickets left they will be sold the day of the race. Last year, however, the Lions Club ran out of tickets about 45 minutes before the race, at a time when many people still wanted to buy them.

The primary benefactor this year of the great Pootatuck Duck Race will once again be Canine Advocates of Newtown, to help its drive to fund a new dog pound. The rest of the money will go to various other Newtown charities.

“Come one! Come all! Bring your smiles and enjoy this fun Newtown day,” said Gordon Williams, committee member.
