Suzanne Chamlin To Exhibit Works At Walsh Art Gallery

FAIRFIELD — Thomas J. Walsh Art Gallery, on the campus of Fairfield University, will present “Painting the Landscape and Other Views,” an exhibit of work by artist Suzanne Chamlin. The exhibit will open Thursday, April 12, with a reception from 5 to 7 pm, and will remain on view through May 27. Admission is free and open to the public.

Ms Chamlin will also speak about her work and her artistic process at a Brown-Bag Director’s Choice lecture on Wednesday, April 18, from 12:30 to 1:30 pm. Admission is $5, and participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch and beverages.

Gallery Director Diana Mille, PhD, recently likened Ms Chamlin’s painting style to the late 19th Century American painting movement called tonalism, stating, “Suzanne’s paintings have an incredible tonalist sensibility, which she makes contemporary through her unique aesthetic conversation with nature.”

The pieces on view will include current paintings as well as a variety of work from the past. A selection of her drawings in ink and ink washes on paper will also be exhibited.

Ms Chamlin paints her landscape on-site, often returning to the same or similar locations for another work.

“Working on-site … influences my decisions about color and shapes,” said the artist.

Ms Chamlin explains that the “Other Views” referenced in the exhibition’s title “also refers to the way that my recent landscapes are constructed.” She added, “I can work on variations and the content of the painting becomes as much about color as it does about the actual ‘scene.’”

Ms Chamlin is assistant professor in studio art at Fairfield University and teaches painting and drawings. Her work is in the collections of National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., Yale University Art Gallery, and The Nelson Atkins Museum, Kansas City. Her paintings and drawings have also, been shown in also and group exhibitions at numerous other galleries and museums.

The gallery is in Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts, on North Benson Road. Hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm; and Sunday, noon to 4 pm. For more information, visit QuickCenter.com or call 203-254-4000, extension 2969.
