KATHARINA RICH PERLOW PRESENTS JOHN FERREN WORKS
set 5/11 avv/lsb #699580
NEW YORK CITY â âJohn Ferren (1905â1970): Journey of an American Modernistâ is on view at Katharina Rich Perlow Gallery through June 6. This is the artistâs 11th solo show with the gallery, where he has been represented since 1983, and includes works from the 1920s through the late 1960s.
Ferrenâs adventurous spirit propelled him to the forefront of modern art. He traveled to Paris twice as a young man; first in 1929, then again in 1931, remaining there until World War II broke out in 1938. During that period, he associated with leading artists of then and today, including Picasso, Miro, Giacometti, Helion and Hans Hofmann.
Between 1936 and 1938, Ferren exhibited in France and at New York Cityâs American Gallery of Pierre Matisse in the Fuller Building. Matisse was the first gallery in New York to successfully show Ferrenâs modernist paintings with rave reviews. Ferren soon became a celebrated painter in the United States. In 1942, he was invited to exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in the exhibition âNew Rugs by Ten American Artists,â which included Arshile Gorky, Stuart Davis and others well-known today.
The gallery is in the Fuller Building at 41 East 57th Street. For information, 212-644-7171.
