GCYD Awards $500 Per Semester Scholarship To Newtown Student
The Governorâs Coalition for Youth with Disabilities (GCYD) will award a $500 renewable scholarship to Glenn Stiewing, a Newtown High School senior, at its annual Youth Scholarship Awards ceremony.
Glennâs award is one of 22 scholarships being awarded this year by GCYD to Connecticut high school seniors with disabilities. The ceremony will be held May 16, 11 am, at the Old Judiciary Room at the State Capitol in Hartford.
Governor John G. Rowland, who hosts the event, says students with disabilities need every advantage in securing higher education.
âWhat we do today to make education possible for students with disabilities will have a positive impact on their future,â Gov. Rowland says.
Glenn attends Newtown High School where he has received honors and high honors. He participates in the cross country team, the basketball team, the track and field team, and the American Foreign Service Club. Glennâs community activities include Women Involved in Newtown, a local food drive, and several area nursing homes. In addition, he works at a golf club. Glenn will study biology and pre-medicine at Eastern Connecticut State University in the fall. Glenn is the recipient of a special scholarship donated by the Connecticut State University System that makes him eligible for $500 per semester for eight semesters.
Made up of a group that brings together business, labor, education, persons with disabilities, and their advocates, GCVDâs mission is to help provide the means for educating the stateâs youth with disabilities to prepare them for successful careers. Funds are raised from the private sector, labor unions, educational institutions, and individual contributions. To date, GCVD has awarded 87 scholarships for a total of $87,000.
