Tree Lighting, Open House

FAIRFIELD — Fairfield Historical Society will host its annual open house on Friday, December 2, from 6 to 8 pm before, during and after the tree lighting on the Town Hall Green. Following a longstanding tradition and to welcome the start of the holiday season, hot mulled cider and cookies will be served.

A special highlight will be the display of an 1880s racing sleigh owned by Nathaniel Wheeler, the founder of Wheeler and Wilson of Bridgeport. After Wheeler made his fortune in sewing machines, he spent his spare time training and racing trotters. The sleigh was used in gentlemen’s trotting races on Clinton Avenue in Bridgeport. A wolf skin blanket and other sleighing accoutrements will also be displayed.

The museum shop, with a selection of Fairfield-related books and holiday gifts, will be open during the event. The society will host a book signing of The Forgotten Flag by Fairfield resident Frances Y. Evan. The book is appropriate for middle school students and tells the story of the burning of Fairfield when it was invaded by British and Hessian soldiers in 1779.

The society is at 636 Old Post Road, opposite Town Hall Green. For information, call 203-259-1598.
