Daniel Tichon is attending the National Student Leadership Conference on Engineering in Washington, D.C., from July 20 through July 30. The conference is being held at the University of Maryland’s College Park campus, where the students will use the university’s engineering labs, hear presentations on diverse aspects of engineering, tour engineering facilities, and be involved in hands on projects.

Daniel will be a senior at Newtown High School this fall. He has participated in the high school marching band all four years as well as being on both the school’s indoor and outdoor track teams. Daniel is also an Eagle Scout with Troop 370 in Newtown.

Newtown High School senior Stephen Graham recently had the opportunity to participate in several hands-on laboratory activities at Alfred University’s School of Engineering, which is an internationally recognized leader in the development of new materials, particularly ceramic and glass materials.

As one of 28 high school students who participated in the program, Stephen had the opportunity to examine everyday objects under a scanning electron microscope. Students also had the chance to learn how microscopic glass beads, filled with high pressure hydrogen may one day power vehicles and how to build robots.

Newtown resident Christopher Jespey enlisted in the Connecticut National Guard. Christopher will be serving in the 102 Second Army Band Division in Bristol after completing basic and advanced training.

Jennifer Ratzing, a sophomore anthropology major at Fairfield County Franklin and Marshall in Lancaster, Penn., has been named to the Dean’s List for the spring semester.

Douglas Bonjour, a communications and journalism major at Hofstra University, Long Island, N.Y., has been named to the Dean’s List for both the fall 2004 and spring 2005 semesters. Douglas will be a sophomore this year at Hofstra pursuing a career as a sports journalist.

2003 graduate of Newtown High School Alex Guiterman, daughter of Gigi Kotler of Avon and Robert Guiterman of Bridgeport, has been named to the Dean’s List at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, for the spring semester. Alex is a junior majoring in sociology and anthropology at Denison.
