When the Newtown Middle School basketball teams finally got to play – after weathering a couple of snow storms – things did not go all that great.

On Thursday, January 29, the boys dropped a 62-55 decision to Jockey Hollow while the girls dropped a 52-40 decision.

For the boys, Dan Smith and Greg Rodden tossed in 11 points apiece while Bob Lapple chipped in with 10. Mike Maher came off the bench to score seven points while Dylan Clark did well to clear the glass, grabbing seven rebounds.

Meanwhile, the seventh-grade team improved to 2-0 with a 58-37 win over Jockey Hollow. Jake DeVellis canned 15 points and Connor Collier added 14. John Grimaldi, Andrew Meisel and Rob O’Donnell popped in five points apiece and David Bray sparked the D with six blocked shots.

For the girls, Morgan Knees scored 11 points and Bridie Rubino scored eight in the loss to Jockey Hollow. Joanna Barry, Jennifer Brill, Katherine Condon, Hannah Tenenbaum and Kathryn Schimdt all played well.

Meanwhile, the seventh-graders suffered a 30-27 last-second loss to Jockey Hollow. Nora Lynn Shimko played a strong game, leading the Lady Lions in every statistical category ... but not doing it all alone. Adelle Ceretta, Lindsey Laub and Jordyn Good anchored the defense while Mary Bloshuk and Jenna Legros were solid under the glass.
