Robert Parker Clarke, Jr

Robert Parker Clarke, Jr, the loving husband of Helen, father of seven and grandfather of 19, died peacefully at home with family by his side in Milford on December 22. A Fairfield resident for 42 years, Mr Clarke was born in New York City in 1920 to Robert P. and Bernice Jerolamen Clarke. He was raised in Bronxville, N.Y., and Sudbury, Vt.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen; children, Robert Parker III of Newtown, Deborah of Bridgeport, John of Cheshire, Catherine of Weston, Peter of Dallas, Texas, Timothy of Fairfield, and Christopher of Larchmont, N.Y.; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

In 1939, he graduated from Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J., and attended Cornell University. Mr Clarke enlisted in 1941, graduated from Pensacola Naval Air Training Center in 1942, and was commissioned as a naval aviator captain in the US Marine Corps. Stationed in the Solomon Islands, Lt Clarke piloted a B-25 in Marine Bombing Squadron 611, was awarded three air medals, and in 1945 the Distinguished Flying Cross for “airmanship, courage and devotion in the face of the enemy.”

After the war, Mr Clarke pursued a career in advertising and marketing and married Helen Mary Dillon in 1948. Together they raised seven children. In 1956, Mr Clarke moved to Fairfield and began a career with Remington Shavers, then a division of the Sperry Rand Corporation in Bridgeport. In 1969 he was named president of the company. In 1978, he founded and was president of Market Channels, Inc, a successful, family owned packaging and warehousing company now based in Milford. An avid skier, tennis player, and sailor, Mr Clarke was a member of the Pequot Yacht Club in Southport.

Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, January 3, at 10 am, at St Lukes Church, Westport. Interment with full Military Honors in Oaklawn Cemetery. Donations may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 607 Main Street, Norwalk, CT 06851. Shaughnessey Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road, Fairfield, is in charge of arrangements.
