Daniel Greene and wife Wendy with “Ring-a-Ghoul,” an oil on canvas measuring 54 by 54 inches. This painting, inspired by a visit to a local amusement park, was sold during the opening reception of the exhibition. “I used very bright oil paints that were not usually on my palette, including purples, oranges and blues,” Daniel Greene said.

“I wanted to convey a feeling of excitement relating to a game of chance,” Daniel Greene said of his “Whack-a-Clown” painting, oil on canvas measuring 54 by 54 inches. In this work the artist gave each of the clowns a slightly different look because of the number of time each had been hit, over the years, by thrown balls.

His love for the sport of baseball was behind this painting, “Milk Bottle Toss,” an oil on wood measuring 40 by 40 inches.

NEW YORK CITY — In an exhibition this month one of America’s best known portrait and figure painters, Daniel Greene captures the material world in meticulously crafted oil and pastel works in his new exhibition “Games” at Gallery Henoch.

After 15 years and more than 85 paintings of the New York City subway stations, Daniel Greene has switched tracks and the focus of his new work now includes New York street fairs and carnivals paired with the interesting characters he finds in these intriguing places. He uses game boards, balloons, toys, stuffed animals, signage and numbers both for their identities and their visual impact.

Greene has influenced a generation of American painters; he has taught more than 10,000 artists in his painting classes and his books and videos have reached over 100,000 artists worldwide. His virtuosity is expressed in both the range of his subject matter and the brilliance of his techniques. In 2004 “Daniel Greene Subway Paintings” at the New York Transit Museum was the inaugural event celebrating the Centennial of the New York City subway system.

The “Games” exhibition opened with a preview reception on Thursday, October 11, at Gallery Henoch, 555 West 25th Street. It will continue through November 3.
